Shayok, Guy lead No. 8 Virginia past Yale, 62-38
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) Marial Shayok scored 15 points and No. 8 Virginia held Yale scoreless for a stretch of nearly nine minutes in the second half in a 62-38 victory Sunday.
Freshman Kyle Guy added 12 points for the Cavaliers (3-0), eight during a 16-0 second-half run that turned a 37-33 lead into a rout.
Blake Reynolds led Yale (2-1) with 10 points. The Bulldogs arrived averaging 93.5 points and had an early 8-0 burst but then never found any rhythm again. They made only 16 of 48 field goal tries (33 percent).
Virginia had a lot to do with that. Following a timeout, Shayok scored, Guy drew roars with a pair of catch-and-shoot 3-pointers and Darius Thompson finished the blitz with a steal and layup to make it 53-33 with 6:53 remaining. Thompson scored 11.
