Rapid Reaction: It Takes Overtime For The Syracuse Basketball Team To Get 1st Road Win
It took an extra stanza for the Syracuse basketball squad to get their first road win of the season. But it couldn’t have come at a better time.
The Syracuse basketball squad had to scrap and claw for every bit in this game and they came away with their sixth victory in conference, 100-93. More importantly they came away with their first road conquest of the season (14-9 overall, 6-4 in ACC play).
John Gillon was criticized early and often this season and for good reason. The point guard position has been awful for the majority of this season.
Jim Boeheim said prior to tonight’s game that the point guard position as a whole hadn’t played one good minute on the road. Well after this game that statement is no longer true.
Johnny G was a cold blooded killer in this game. He was unfazed and aggressive throughout the game, something that hasn’t been the case on the road for him this season.
Gillon had a career high (43) points in this game. The last player to score 40+ points in a game for

the Orange was assistant coach, Gerry McNamara (2004). Going back to Gillon’s blood temperature for a moment he’s 27-of-28 from the charity stripe over the last two games, unreal.
While the team overall shot 91% going 21-of-23 as a team. Some more stats: SU shot an unreal 56% from the field, made 15 threes (NC State made 14 although they hoisted up six more shots to do it).
SU trailed by 16 with a little under 9 minutes to go in the game and that’s when they really showed their mettle. For a team with so many new pieces, it seemed easy to say this team didn’t have the necessary chemistry to persevere through these situations.
White had 9 points of the 13 in OT period for SU. Everyone stepped up, but Gillon’s 9-of-10 from downtown and clutch free throw shooting lifted SU in a game of runs against the Wolfpack.
Jim Boeheim is now one win away from 1000* (although no asterisk should be necessary). Up next they have a home tilt against the Virginia Cavaliers.
