Peterson has 46 for scoring record as VMI beats Mercer 91-82

LEXINGTON, Va. (AP) QJ Peterson set a VMI single-game scoring record when he pumped in 46 points to lead the Keydets to a 91-82 win over Mercer on Thursday night.

Peterson knocked down five from long range, made 12 of 25 field goals and was 17 of 18 from the line. He also grabbed nine rebounds and had four assists for VMI (8-19, 3-13 Southern Conference).

Julian Eleby added 20 points and Tim Marshall chipped in 17 for the Keydets, who have won two of their last four after dropping six-straight games.

Lawrence Brown had a layup and Ethan Stair made two free throws as Mercer closed to 74-71 with 3:59 left. Fred Iruafemi answered with a jumper and the Keydets finished on a 17-11 run for the win.

Phillip Leonard led Mercer (18-12, 8-9) with 16 points, Jordan Strawberry added 15 and Stephon Jelks had 14 while grabbing 12 rebounds for the Bears.
