Hampton tops Morgan St 87-79, sits alone atop MEAC standings

HAMPTON, Va. (AP) Quinton Chievous had 20 points with 10 rebounds, and Reginald Johnson Jr. finished with 20 points and a career-high tying eight assists to help Hampton beat Morgan State 87-79 Monday night and take sole possession of first place in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference standings.

Jervon Pressley added 15 points and 10 rebounds for Hampton.

Johnson scored all of Hampton's points during an 11-2 run that spanned halftime and put the Pirates (15-9, 10-2) up for good with 19 minutes left.

Brian Darden hit a pair of 3-pointers and Chievous scored 10-straight points during a 16-4 spurt that made it 64-51 seven minutes later.

Two free throws by Rasean Simpson pulled Morgan State (5-19, 3-8) within five, 80-75, with 1:19 remaining, but the Bears got no closer.

Simpson and Phillip Carr scored 21 points apiece to lead Morgan State. Andre Horne Jr. added 13 points.
