Green Bay announcer says game ejection was misunderstanding

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 9:49 p.m. ET

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) Radio listeners might have been puzzled to hear another team's play-by-play announcer briefly calling Green Bay's Horizon League semifinal win.

A referee ejected Phoenix announcer Matt Menzl during Monday's game against No. 1 seed Valparaiso in Detroit. Menzl says it was all a misunderstanding. He says the ref thought he was waving him off after a call went against Green Bay.

Menzl tells Green Bay Press-Gazette Media (http://gbpg.net/1TMeDoE ) that he talks with his hands, and his gestures were misinterpreted.

Menzl handed his headset to an Oakland University play-by-play announcer and stepped away to explain the situation. Menzl returned to the microphone and says he missed only ''a couple minutes'' of game action.
