Peru was one of 13 countries to participate in the inaugural World Cup. Though Peru only scored once in two games, its 1-0 loss to eventual champion Uruguay was the closest any team came to knocking off the host nation.

Peru’s extended absence from the World Cup ended in 1970 with a trip to Mexico. The country earned its first World Cup victory with a 3-2 win over Bulgaria, ultimately finishing the Group Stage with a 2-0-1 record. In the Quarter-finals, Peru fell to Brazil, which went on to win the tournament.

After missing the 1974 World Cup, Peru returned in 1978 with another successful outing. The team’s 2-1-0 record in the Group Stage was enough for a first-place finish and advancement to the Second Round. There, the stiffer competition proved too much as Peru dropped all three games and was outscored 10-0.
Making consecutive appearances for the first time, Peru finished at the bottom of the standings in a very evenly-matched Group Stage despite a record of 0-2-1. The tournament began with draws against Cameroon and Italy, but ended with a 5-1 loss to Poland.

Peru became the last of 32 countries to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, needing a 2-0 play-off win over New Zealand to secure its spot in the field. The 36-year gap between World Cup appearances is still only Peru’s second-longest ever, after a 40-year absence from 1930 to 1970.
