WORLD CUP APPEARANCES
WORLD CUP RECORD
Round of 16 (2006)
GOALS SCORED (RANK)
Australia’s first World Cup appearance occurred in 1974 in West Germany, but its first goal would have to wait. Placed in a group with the host nation, East Germany and Chile, Australia was shut out against East and West Germany before a scoreless draw versus Chile.

32 years later, Australia finally returned to the World Cup. A 3-1 victory over Japan served as the country’s first World Cup victory and first goal, scored by Tim Cahill. Australia advanced to the Knockout Stage with a 1-1-1 record, but lost in the Round of 16 to eventual champ Italy.
Australia again finished 1-1-1 in 2010, but a goal differential of -3 prevented the country from advancing. The culprit was a 4-0 loss to third-place squad Germany.
A poor defensive showing at the 2014 World Cup contributed to Australia’s 0-0-3 record. The team allowed three goals in each Group Stage match and its nine total goals surrendered tied Cameroon for the most in group play.
Australia was among the last teams to qualify for a trip to Russia, needing a play-off win over Honduras to do so. But the country has ensured a fourth-straight World Cup appearance after competing in just one of the first 17 World Cups.
