GAME LOG

INJURIES

Hits 50-yard mark Johnson rushed 12 times for 50 yards and wasn't targeted in Sunday's 25-6 loss to New England.
Impact Johnson worked in a timeshare with Michael Carter, who turned 11 carries and three targets into 88 scrimmage yards. Tevin Coleman got just five carries, so the Jets appear set to rely primarily on the tandem of Johnson and Carter in the backfield moving forward. Johnson has produced 76 scrimmage yards through two games and will face the Broncos on the road in Week 3.

Mac vs. Zach: Rookie QBs highlight latest Pats-Jets showdown

Mac Jones and Zach Wilson are providing some fresh-faced buzz to an old AFC East rivalry that has gotten rather stale

Limited involvement in Week 1 Johnson rushed four times for 15 yards and caught one of three targets for 11 yards in Sunday's 19-14 loss to the Panthers.
Impact Johnson whiffed on a pass-blocking assignment early and also caused a delay of game penalty by taking the field late with the punt team, which is unlikely to earn him any favors in the three-man rotation with Tevin Coleman and Michael Carter. On the other hand, Johnson was also the primary running back when the Jets' offense finally started to find success in the second half, even though Johnson himself didn't play a major role in that success. All three Jets running backs got between five and nine touches and will likely continue to rotate in Week 2 against the Patriots.

FANTASY PLAYS: Players to start and sit for NFL Week 1

The start-or-sit dilemma is part of managing a fantasy football team

Roster lock after strong camp Rich Cimini of ESPN.com believes Johnson will open the season as one of the Jets' top two running backs alongside Tevin Coleman.
Impact Johnson has solidified a prominent role in the Jets' backfield with a strong camp. New York's expected to use a committee approach including Johnson and Coleman, as well as fourth-round picks from the past two drafts in Michael Carter and La'Mical Perine. Coleman's probably first in line for touches, but Johnson has shown effectiveness as both a rusher and a pass-catcher, making him an option in virtually all situations.

Sees big workload Friday Johnson carried the ball 13 times for 53 yards and a touchdown and caught both his targets for 18 yards in Friday's preseason tie against the Eagles.
Impact With Tevin Coleman held out of the preseason finale and La'Mical Perine (foot) banged up, Johnson and rookie Michael Carter split snaps in the backfield with the first-team offense. It was Johnson who saw the bigger workload and made the bigger impact though, and he found the end zone on a three-yard run for the final play of the third quarter. The 23-year-old seems likely to begin the season in the No. 2 spot on the depth chart, but all four backs could wind up featuring prominently in what looks like a true backfield committee.

Plenty of familiar faces playing in new places around NFL

Lots of familiar faces are playing new places around the NFL this season
AUGUST 27, 2021 • Associated Press
Modest showing Saturday Johnson gained 22 yards on six carries in Saturday's preseason win over the Packers.
Impact The third-year player essentially served as the Jets' No. 2 RB, as he split the backfield in the first half with Tevin Coleman before turning things over to rookie Michael Carter and La'Mical Perine after the break. That would seem to give Johnson a secure spot on the 53-man roster, but he could have a hard time generating any fantasy value, as Coleman and Carter seem like better bets to earn a significant workload.
AUGUST 22, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Falling behind in RB competition Johnson is the No. 3 running back on the Jets' initial unofficial depth chart.
Impact Johnson is behind Tevin Coleman and La'Mical Perine but surprisingly ahead of rookie fourth-round pick Michael Carter. All indications out of camp suggest that Carter is impressing the coaching staff and likely will climb before long, so this is far from an ideal early placement for Johnson, who entered camp as part of an open competition for lead-back duties. There's still plenty of time for this order to get shaken up as the preseason unfolds.

Impresses at minicamp Johnson has impressed in minicamp and remains in the Jets' running back plans, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
Impact Johnson's still in the mix for the starting role, though Tevin Coleman is expected to open the season as the leading figure in a backfield that also features rookie fourth-round pick Michael Carter. For now, Johnson's at least a safe bet to make the roster, and a clearer picture of the running back pecking order should emerge once the team takes the field in the preseason.
JUNE 29, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
In three-way battle Johnson is splitting first-team reps in OTAs with Tevin Coleman and Michael Carter, Connor Hughes of The Athletic reports.
Impact Coleman technically is the starter at this point in the offseason, but Johnson and Carter still have plenty of time to make their cases for the top spot on the depth chart. Carter projects as more of a change-of-pace type, leaving Coleman and Johnson to battle it out for the majority of early-down opportunities, including the all-important goal-line looks. This is a position battle that may not be decided until deep into the preseason, so it'll be important to monitor these players' performances as Week 1 approaches.
JUNE 1, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Could open season as starter Johnson sits atop the Jets' running back depth chart put together by Tyler Calvaruso of USA Today.
Impact Johnson's burst should make him a strong fit for offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur's system, but he'll have plenty of competition in a crowded Jets backfield. Though Johnson's strong play down the stretch last season has made the starting job his to lose in Calvaruso's eyes, free-agent acquisition Tevin Coleman, rookie fourth-round draft pick Michael Carter and fellow young running backs La'Mical Perine and Josh Adams will all be vying for that spot as well.

Frank Gore, NFL's No. 3 rusher, unsure about playing future

Frank Gore is in no rush to decide if he’ll give it another run next season
JANUARY 5, 2021 • Associated Press
Splits with Adams in finale Johnson rushed 11 times for 45 yards and caught both of his targets for 23 yards in Sunday's 28-14 loss to the Patriots.
Impact With Frank Gore (chest) and La'Mical Perine (illness) inactive, Johnson split carries with Josh Adams, who had a nearly identical 47 yards on 11 carries but also found the end zone. The 23-year-old Johnson finishes his season with 254 yards and a touchdown on 54 carries, along with 99 yards and a touchdown on 16 catches. He's favored to secure a depth role in New York's backfield next season, though Johnson will likely have competition for a roster spot.

Impact Johnson had the Jets backfield mostly to himself one other time this season, and he produced 104 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries after Gore got hurt early in a Week 13 loss to the Raiders. New England's defense has been vulnerable against the run this season, so Johnson could make for an intriguing fantasy option in both season-long and DFS formats in Week 17. In addition to his big game on the ground against the Raiders, Johnson has shown an ability to contribute as a pass catcher out of the backfield, as evidenced by his six-reception effort versus the Rams in Week 15. Josh Adams should also factor into the Jets' backfield rotation, but Johnson's involvement in the passing game seemingly gives him the higher overall fantasy ceiling.

The Latest: Pepperdine men's basketball on pause

DECEMBER 30, 2020 • Associated Press
Limited role in Perine's return Johnson rushed twice for 13 yards and wasn't targeted in the passing game in Sunday's 23-16 win over the Browns.
Impact Johnson ranked a distant third in carries among Jets running backs behind Frank Gore (14) and La'Mical Perine (nine) in Perine's return from an ankle injury. New York played from ahead for the final three quarters, so Johnson's pass-catching skills out of the backfield weren't called upon after last week's six-catch performance. Gore left in the second half with a chest injury, and if he's unable to play in next week's season finale in New England, Johnson would likely take on a larger role on passing downs while Perine handles the bulk of the early-down work.
