Confident Jets aim to go from worst to first on defense

Dealing with injury
Johnson is currently dealing with a hamstring injury, Andy Vasquez of The Bergen Record reports.
Impact
Johnson doesn't currently have a timetable for a return, but he's unlikely to return to the field this week. The 24-year-old was able to earn an increase in snaps last season, but the addition of Breece Hall in the first round of the 2022 Draft will threaten his role.

Tops 600 scrimmage yards in 2021
Johnson finished the 2021 season with 61 carries for 238 yards and two touchdowns in 16 games. He added 34 catches for 372 yards and two touchdowns on 55 targets.
Impact
Johnson handled himself adequately while bouncing up and down the depth chart in the Jets backfield. He's explosive with the ball in his hands but struggled with drops and a lack of awareness, with the low point of his season coming when the ball bounced off Johnson's back for an interception. The 24-year-old running back remains under contract with the Jets through next season, and Johnson is well positioned to make the team's roster in a change-of-pace role unless New York bolsters its backfield depth in the offseason.

Finds end zone after Carter injury
Johnson rushed five times for 35 yards and a touchdown while catching three of four targets for 47 yards in Sunday's 28-24 loss to the Buccaneers.
Impact
Michael Carter exited the game with a concussion in the first half, leaving Johnson and Austin Walter to split carries with Tevin Coleman on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Johnson had been used sparingly of late but made the most of the extra opportunities, giving the Jets a 24-10 lead with a one-yard touchdown plunge in the third quarter. It was all Buccaneers after that, though. Johnson's usage could decline in Week 18 against the Bills if Carter or Coleman suits up.

Gets 10 touches in Week 14 loss
Johnson rushed six times for 17 yards and caught four of seven targets for 40 yards in Sunday's 30-9 loss to New Orleans.
Impact
The Jets were already without Michael Carter (ankle) and Tevin Coleman (concussion) coming in, and Austin Walter was ruled out due to an illness without playing a snap, leaving just Johnson and La'Mical Perine to share backfield snaps. Neither guy got much going on the ground, though Johnson finished as the second-leading receiver in the struggling Jets passing game. He should maintain a prominent role in Week 15 against Miami, though Johnson hasn't made much of his opportunities lately.

Opportunity knocks with Coleman out
Johnson could take on a larger role Sunday against the Saints, as Ethan B. Greenberg of the Jets' official site reports that Tevin Coleman (concussion) won't play.
Impact
Johnson and Austin Walter likely will split reps in the backfield with Coleman joining Michael Carter (ankle) on the sideline. The Jets have been reluctant to give Johnson much work on the ground, as he's logged more than six rushing attempts only once this season, but he has caught at least five passes on three separate occasions.

Remains stuck behind Coleman
Johnson rushed once for one yard and caught two of four targets for 14 yards in Sunday's 33-18 loss to the Eagles.
Impact
Johnson hasn't capitalized on the absence of Michael Carter (ankle), having been out-touched 32-9 by Tevin Coleman over the past two weeks. Coleman will likely receive the lion's share of playing time in New York's backfield against the stout Saints front in Week 14, leaving Johnson in a change-of-pace role once again.

Just six carries with Carter out
Johnson rushed six times for 42 yards and failed to catch his only target in Sunday's 21-14 win over Houston.
Impact
Johnson averaged an impressive 7.0 yards per carry but finished third on the team in attempts behind Tevin Coleman (16) and Austin Walter (nine). Walter was the only one of the three to score a touchdown, and it's apparent that Michael Carter's (ankle) absence won't translate to a leading role for Johnson. The lone ball thrown in Johnson's direction bounced off his back for an interception in the first quarter, so perhaps rookie quarterback Zach Wilson was loath to throw Johnson's way again.

Larger role on horizon
Johnson and Tevin Coleman are both expected to fill larger roles out of the Jets backfield beginning with Sunday's game against the Texans after lead back Michael Carter (ankle) wa...
Impact
Carter's injury isn't viewed as season-ending, and the Jets are seemingly optimistic that he'll be ready to play as soon as Week 15 against the Dolphins after he sits out the required three games following his placement on IR. In any case, Carter's short-term absence paves the way for Johnson to pick up more work after he played no more than 43 percent of the Jets' offensive snaps in any of his seven appearances since maxing out at a 57-percent snap share Week 3 in Denver. Expect him to fill more of a heightened change-of-pace role alongside Coleman, who's a better candidate to handle earlydown work. That being said, the Jets' tendency to play from behind in games could prove more favorable for Johnson than Coleman.
