Makes 53-man roster Johnson secured a spot on Buffalo's 53-man roster Tuesday, Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic reports.
Impact Johnson was one of three running backs to make the team, joining starter James Cook and rookie fourth-round draft pick Ray Davis. Johnson and Davis are expected to split backup duties. They are listed at 210 and 211 pounds, respectively, so both backups are better suited for short-yardage work than the 190-pound Cook, though 237-pound quarterback Josh Allen often calls his own number in such situations.

Small role in Saturday's win Johnson carried the ball once for six yards in Saturday's preseason win over the Steelers. He was not targeted in the passing game.
Impact Johnson was and perhaps still is in the running to be James Cook's primary backup, but he hurt his hamstring in late July and missed the first preseason game, then finally returned to practice last week and played just seven snaps Saturday. Rookie Ray Davis looks like the favorite for the job now, though the Bills could mix and match when Cook needs a breather due to the differing skill sets of Johnson and Davis. It's worth noting that undrafted rookie Frank Gore ran well Saturday, logging eight carries for 41 yards, while veteran Darrynton Evans ran seven times for 37 yards.
AUGUST 21, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Healthy again Johnson (hamstring) returned to practice Monday, Katherine Fitzgerald of The Buffalo News reports.
Impact Johnson suffered a hamstring injury during practice last month but is now healthy again. The 2019 sixth-round pick will likely serve as a backup running back and kick returner once the regular season begins.
AUGUST 13, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Not in uniform Saturday Johnson (hamstring) wasn't in uniform ahead of Saturday's preseason game against the Bears, according to Jay Skurski of The Buffalo News.
Impact The same applies to WRs Mack Hollins (leg), Chase Claypool (toe) and Justin Shorter (knee). Johnson's next opportunity to see exhibition action will be Aug. 17 against the Steelers. Once he returns to the mix, Johnson will resume competing with Ray Davis for slotting behind top RB James Cook.
AUGUST 10, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Out with hamstring injury Johnson will miss practice Tuesday with a hamstring injury, Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic reports.
Impact Johnson departed Monday's practice early and was evaluated by trainers, leaving rookie Ray Davis as the most likely RB to rotate in behind James Cook with the starting offense. Johnson and Davis reportedly had a near-even split of first-team reps Sunday when Cook was absent for personal reasons, with Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic noting a slight advantage in Johnson's favor. Missed time due to a hamstring injury could improve Davis' odds of taking over the No. 2 RB role that Johnson handled late last season.
JULY 30, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Exits practice injured Johnson left Monday's practice early after an apparent injury, Alex Brasky of the Batavia Daily News reports.
Impact Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic reports that Johnson and rookie Ray Davis had a "pretty close to even split" of first-team reps Sunday when starter James Cook was absent for personal reasons. Cook returned Monday, with Johnson then suffering an apparent lower-body injury not long after.

Six free agents Bills should target after their roster shakeup
Cleared to play vs. Steelers Johnson (concussion) doesn't carry an injury designation into Sunday's wild-card round game against the Steelers.
Impact Johnson was a limited participant in all three of Buffalo's practices heading into the postseason, but Sal Capaccio of WGR 550 reports that the running back has cleared concussion protocol. Johnson, Leonard Fournette and Latavius Murray are all options to spell starting running back James Cook, with Johnson profiling as the youngest and shiftiest of the three depth options.

Tests confirm concussion Johnson (concussion) has been downgraded to out Sunday against the Dolphins.
Impact Johnson was evaluated for a head injury, and the tests revealed a concussion. He won't return to Sunday's game, so Johnson will finish the regular season with 30 carries for 132 yards, as well as seven catches on as many targets for 62 yards and a touchdown. Johnson will have to clear the NFL's five-step concussion protocol to suit up in the wild-card round of the playoffs.

Cleared to return Week 17 Johnson (shoulder) doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday's game against the Patriots.
Impact Johnson practiced fully Friday to gain clearance after limited sessions Wednesday and Thursday. He's set to return from a one-game absence and continue splitting the leftovers behind starting running back James Cook with Latavius Murray, though Buffalo's backfield could get even more crowded if the Bills elevate Leonard Fournette from the practice squad again.
DECEMBER 29, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Exits game with shoulder injury Johnson (shoulder) is questionable to return to Sunday's game against the Cowboys.
Impact Johnson sustained a shoulder injury in the second quarter of Sunday's game. If he remains out, Deonte Harty and Skalil Shakir are candidates to take over the kick return duties.
DECEMBER 17, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Continued usage with new OC Johnson carried six times for 19 yards and was not targeted in the passing game in Sunday's 37-34 overtime loss to the Eagles.
Impact Johnson did catch three balls -- one for a touchdown -- in Week 11, so it's not like the team views him as a one-trick pony. He's still behind James Cook and Latavious Murray in the pecking order, plus Damien Harris (neck) could eventually return before season's end, but it's at least worth noting that Johnson has been given an opportunity in the offense after previously not seeing more than one offensive snap in any game under former offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey, who was fired after Week 10. With interim OC Joe Brady now in charge, Johnson has seen 24 offensive snaps over the past two weeks. While Johnson still is too far down the pecking order to consider using, he's also probably just an injury or two away from having a meaningful role in an offense that can put up a high number of points.

Replaces Damien Harris on roster The Bills signed Johnson to the 53-man roster Friday.
Impact He had resided on the Bills' practice squad prior to the transaction, while fellow running back Damien Harris (concussion/neck) was placed on injured reserve in a corresponding move. Johnson will provide depth in a Buffalo backfield that also includes James Cook and Latavius Murray. The running back out of Maryland has appeared in 62 NFL games and has a career average of 4.4 yards per carry.

Back with the Jets Johnson is signing a one-year deal to remain with the Jets, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
Impact In 17 games with the Jets during the 2022 season, Johnson recorded 30 carries for 160 yards and one touchdown, while adding 12 catches (on 24 targets) for 88 yards. Now that he's back with the team for 2023, Johnson is slated to reprise his depth role in New York's backfield behind Breece Hall (knee), Michael Carter and Zonovan Knight. The 2019 sixth-rounder is also a key special teamer for the Jets, per Cimini.
MARCH 23, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Minimal role throughout 2022 Johnson rushed five times for 12 yards and caught two of three targets for 13 yards in Sunday's 11-6 loss to the Dolphins. He wraps up the 2022 season with 30 carries for 160 yards...
Impact Johnson set career lows in both rushing and receiving yards in his fourth NFL season, though he averaged a career-high 5.3 yards per carry. The 25-year-old running back out of Maryland will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason.
JANUARY 10, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Leading rusher in Seattle Johnson carried the ball eight times for 46 yards and caught one of five targets for 11 yards in Sunday's 23-6 loss to the Seahawks.
Impact It was a nightmarish performance from the entire Jets offense in a must-win game, and Johnson wound up leading the team in rushing yards. It's only the second time all season he's topped 17 rushing yards, and with New York now eliminated from playoff contention, it's not clear how the backfield workload will be split between Johnson, Zonovan Knight and Michael Carter in Week 18 against the Dolphins.
JANUARY 2, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Seven yards on TNF Johnson rushed twice for seven yards and wasn't targeted in Thursday's 19-3 loss to Jacksonville.
Impact Johnson's meager rushing total was enough to lead all Jets running backs, as New York's banged-up offensive line failed to open up any holes. With Zach Wilson struggling mightily, New York inserted the Taysom Hill-like Chris Streveler under center in the third quarter, and Streveler wound up leading the team with 54 rushing yards.
DECEMBER 23, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Catches six passes with Carter out Johnson rushed once for three yards and caught six of seven targets for 38 yards in Sunday's 27-22 loss to Minnesota.
Impact With Michael Carter (ankle) inactive, Johnson was the Jets' running back of choice in passing situations. Johnson will either take on a similar role in Week 14 against the Bills if Carter sits again or be relegated to the bench if Carter returns, as Zonovan Knight has emerged as the Jets' primary running back since Carter went down.
DECEMBER 4, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Committee role likely in Week 13 Jets head coach Robert Saleh said Johnson is expected to be part of a three-man backfield committee Sunday against the Vikings that also includes Zonovan Knight and James Robinson,...
Impact Robinson was the odd man out as a healthy inactive in last week's win over the Bears, but Saleh suggested that Robinson, Johnson and Knight will all see opportunities Sunday with lead back Michael Carter (ankle) listed as doubtful and not expected to play. After Carter departed last week upon taking two snaps in the second half, Knight finished with a 64 percent snap share after halftime, compared to a 29 percent mark from Johnson. The addition of Robinson to the mix further complicates matters, so it may be tough on Johnson to replicate the strong production he delivered against the Bears during his limited playing time. Johnson carried five times for 62 yards and hauled in one of two targets for a 16-yard gain across his 15 total snaps.
