Parting ways with New England
The Patriots plan to release Sanu, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
Impact
Meanwhile, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network adds that the move won't show up on Wednesday's transaction wire, which opens up the slight possibility that a trade could happen. In any even, the Patriots are moving on from the veteran wideout, who "lacked speed in [training] camp, according to Doug Kyed of NESN.com. Sanu's release likely paves the way for N'Keal Harry to get more targets, but it's possible that the team will also look to add wideout depth in the coming days.

Could be on roster bubble
Sanu could be "hard-pressed" to make the Patriots' Week 1 roster, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
Impact
Reiss cites Sanu's $6.5 million salary as the main reason the wideout's spot on the roster is dicey, especially after he struggled to fit in with New England when he came over in a trade with the Falcons last October. Karen Guregian of the Boston Herald notes that while Sanu "still can't separate," he has established some chemistry with new quarterback Cam Newton. At this point, Julian Edelman and N'Keal Harry are the only roster locks among New England's wideout corps. It's worth noting that Sanu was hampered by an ankle injury during his time with New England last season, so the team may be willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and see what he can offer on the field now that he's feeling healthy again.

Comes off PUP list
Sanu (ankle) passed a physical Tuesday, causing the Patriots to activate the wide receiver from the active/PUP list, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
Impact
Sanu underwent a procedure on his ankle in early March to address an injury that plagued him upon his arrival in New England from Atlanta last October. During nine games (including playoffs) with the Patriots, he accumulated 27 catches for 218 yards and one touchdown on 52 targets, which is a far cry from his typical efficiency metrics. In three-plus seasons with the Falcons, Sanu posted a 71.9 percent catch rate and averaged 11.1 yards per reception. With the state of his ankle resolved, he can turn his focus to building a rapport with Cam Newton in the post-Tom Brady era.

Going to PUP list
The Patriots placed Sanu (ankle) on the active/PUP list Sunday, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
Impact
Sanu gutted through an ankle injury in the second half of last season, undergoing surgery in early March to address the issue. By mid-May, he had shed his walking boot, and later his trainer Hilton Alexander noted Sanu was "probably faster, quicker, leaner and in better shape now than prior to the surgery," per Mike Reiss of ESPN.com. With Tom Brady off to Tampa Bay, Sanu will be working with new signal-caller Cam Newton, once he proves that he's healthy.
