GAME LOG

INJURIES

One catch in loss Sanu caught his lone target for 16 yards in Sunday's 30-18 loss to the Colts.
Impact Sanu was on the field for 50 percent of the 49ers' offensive snaps, which is right in line with the playing time he has been receiving over the previous three contests. The one target, however, was a significant drop-off from the 4.6 targets he had been averaging over that three-week span since taking over as the main slot receiver. Regardless, Sanu doesn't bring enough upside to the table to warrant consideration in most formats.
OCTOBER 25, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Two catches against Cardinals Sanu caught two of three targets for 19 yards in Sunday's 17-10 loss to the Cardinals.
Impact Sanu logged 30 offensive snaps (46 percent) Sunday, finishing third among San Francisco wideouts as he has been doing for consecutive weeks now. The passing attack struggled overall under Trey Lance, as the rookie continues to learn on the fly while starter Jimmy Garoppolo (hamstring) is on the mend. Sanu provides more value to the 49ers than he does to fantasy squads in his current role.

OCTOBER 10, 2021 • 49ERS.COM
Four receptions in loss Sanu was on the field for 39 offensive snaps (51 percent) Sunday, finishing with four receptions (five targets) for 35 yards in a 28-21 loss to Seattle.
Impact Despite finishing third in offensive snaps at the receiver position, as expected, Sanu actually was tied for second in receptions and outplayed starter Brandon Aiyuk (one reception for 15 yards). The veteran wideout still isn't providing enough volume to make a fantasy impact in games where he doesn't find the end zone. If Trey Lance is forced to start in place of the injured Jimmy Garoppolo (hamstring) against the Cardinals on Sunday, Sanu's stock could take a slight hit given the rookie quarterback's vertical passing style.

Resumes No. 3 WR role Sanu had three receptions (six targets) for 36 yards in Sunday's 30-28 loss to Green Bay.
Impact Sanu was on the field for 45 offensive snaps (64 percent), finishing only behind starters Deebo Samuel (90 percent) and Brandon Aiyuk (86 percent). It appears that the veteran wideout has reclaimed his role as the team's primary slot receiver after losing snaps and targets to Jauan Jennings and Trent Sherfield over the previous two weeks. Sanu still doesn't provide enough fantasy value if he doesn't find the end zone, leaving him off the fantasy radar for most standard league managers against the Seahawks next Sunday.
SEPTEMBER 27, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
No catches in win Sanu failed to haul in his lone target in Sunday's 17-11 win over the Eagles.
Impact Sanu finished fourth in offensive snaps (29 percent) with Brandon Aiyuk (54 percent) resuming his role as second on the depth chart. It appears that Trent Sherfield (34 percent) has jumped ahead of the veteran in the pecking order, but neither is much of a fantasy option in their respective roles heading into next week's matchup against the Packers.
SEPTEMBER 20, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Logs one catch in win Sanu caught his lone target for seven yards in Sunday's 41-33 win over Detroit.
Impact Sanu manned the slot for the majority of the contest and also handled punt return duties for his new club. The veteran wideout's lone catch came on a crucial third-down conversion, which had a bigger impact for the 49ers than it did for any fantasy managers. Sanu won't carry much value heading into a Week 2 matchup against the Eagles on Sunday.
SEPTEMBER 13, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
No. 3 spot looking like a lock Sanu rolled out with the starters against the Raiders on Sunday, failing to haul in his lone target in a 34-10 preseason win.
Impact The stat line is irrelevant for the veteran wideout, as his presence with the first unit is more telling. With the 49ers cutting ties with Richie James this week, Sanu appears to have won the battle for the No. 3 role in San Francisco's receiving corps. The 32-year-old doesn't bring a ton of upside to the table, but he does provide the team with experience and size in the red zone (6-foot-2, 210 pounds). Not to mention he has history with head coach Kyle Shanahan when they were together in Atlanta. Sanu should be treated as a deep PPR option heading into a Week 1 matchup with another one of his former teams in Detroit.

49ers hope deeper receiver corps helps boost passing game

Whoever ends up playing quarterback for San Francisco this season figures to have a much deeper set of receivers at his disposal than what the 49ers had last season
AUGUST 17, 2021 • Associated Press
Expected to sit Saturday Sanu is not expected to play in Saturday's preseason opener against the Chiefs, according to Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle.
Impact It was not stated why Sanu is likely to sit, but the nine-year veteran does not need the live reps, even though he remains in the mix to open the season as the 49ers' third receiver.

Healthy Sanu providing leadership in 2nd stint with 49ers

Mohamed Sanu is thrilled to have a second chance with the San Francisco 49ers
AUGUST 3, 2021 • Associated Press
Battling for third WR spot Sanu is competing for the No. 3 receiver job in San Francisco, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Impact Sanu has bounced around the league since his departure from Atlanta, including three appearances for the 49ers early last season. He later played seven games for Detroit, before landing back in San Francisco this offseason. Turning 32 in August, the veteran wideout says he's feeling much better this year after battling an ankle condition last season. Competition for the No. 3 role is led by Richie James and Jalen Hurd, while starters Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk are safely atop the depth chart. The No. 3 WR spot might be important to San Francisco's offense, but it isn't likely to come with more than three or four targets per game when Samuel, Aiyuk and TE George Kittle are healthy at the same time.

Joins Niners Sanu signed a one-year deal with the 49ers on Saturday, David Lombardi of The Athleticreports.
Impact Sanu spent three games with the 49ers early last season before ultimately joining the Lions in late November. The veteran wide receiver did record 16 receptions for 178 yards and a touchdown over his final seven games with the Lions, but it's hard to imagine Sanu will be expected to make a dramatic impact with his new team considering his dwindling level of production. The 31-year-old is thus expected to compete for one of the Niners' final remaining roster spots throughout training camp.
MARCH 27, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Finishes season on low note Sanu caught two of six targets for 13 yards during Sunday's 37-35 loss to the Vikings.
Impact Sanu finished second on the team in looks, but the 31-year-old failed to do much damage to a weak Vikings secondary that teammate Marvin Jones flamed for 180 yards and two touchdowns on 11 targets. Sanu will thus finish the year with 17 receptions for 187 yards and one touchdown on 24 targets over 10 games with Detroit and San Francisco. While the veteran did well to carve out a role with the Lions after the 49ers let him loose after three games, Sanu and his lack of explosion may not have much of a market in free agency this offseason.
JANUARY 4, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Two more catches Sanu caught two of four targets for 22 yards during Saturday's 47-7 loss to the Buccaneers.
Impact Like the rest of Detroit's receiving corps, Sanu's prospects were doomed from the start once Matthew Stafford (ankle) left early due to injury. While the veteran has still seen nine total targets over the past two games, the explosiveness Sanu lacks in his profile makes him a hard sell in fantasy with Stafford and it will only get worse if Chase Daniel is throwing passes in Week 17 against the Vikings.
