Saints' Hill seizing starting QB role, damaged digit and all

Saints' Mark Ingram goes on reserve/COVID-19 The designation doesn’t necessarily rule out the former Alabama All-American for Sunday’s game.
DECEMBER 8, 2021 • AL.COM
Heads to COVID-19 list The Saints placed Ingram on the reserve/COVID-19 list Wednesday, Jeff Duncan of The Athletic reports.
Impact Ingram tested positive for the virus, and while he's reportedly vaccinated, he's still face a tight timeline to return consecutive negative tests in order to gain clearance prior to Sunday's matchup with the Jets. If Ingram is out and Alvin Kamara (knee) misses another game, the Saints will be left with Tony Jones Ty Montgomery and Dwayne Washington as backfield options on the active roster, while running backs Josh Adams and Malcolm Perry reside on the practice squad.

Pedestrian production as lead back Ingram (knee) rushed 10 times for 28 yards and brought in one of two targets for minus-2 yards in the Saints' 27-17 loss to the Cowboys on Thursday night.
Impact Ingram once again served as the lead back with Alvin Kamara (knee) sitting out a fourth straight contest. The veteran back couldn't come close to the production he'd generated in his first two starts in Kamara's stead, when he'd posted 108 and 113 total yards in Weeks 10 and 11, respectively, before sitting out the Week 12 Thanksgiving loss to the Bills. Ingram may be back to a complementary role in a Week 14 visit to the Jets in 10 days, considering Kamara should have a good chance to return for that game.

Slated for leading role Thursday Ingram (knee) is in line to be the Saints' lead running back Thursday versus the Cowboys with Alvin Kamara (knee) again sidelined, Mike Triplett of ESPN.com reports.
Impact Ingram sat out the Saints' Thanksgiving loss to the Bills due to swelling in his knee, but the issue didn't impact his practice reps this week. The potential existed for Kamara to end a three-game absence after he was listed as limited on all three injury reports this week, but ultimately his MCL sprain will keep him in street clothes. In two outings without Kamara since Ingram returned to New Orleans, the latter totaled 40 touches for 221 yards from scrimmage and one rushing TD. Ingram is in store for another large workload considering his primary competitors for backfield reps are wide receiver Ty Montgomery, fullback Adam Prentice and special teamer Dwayne Washington, with the Saints making Tony Jones a healthy scratch.

Lead role awaits Ingram is expected to serve as the Saints' lead back Thursday against the Cowboys with Alvin Kamara (knee) listed as questionable for the contest but not expected to play, Amie Jus...
Impact Like Kamara, Ingram was sidelined for last week's Thanksgiving Day loss to the Bills due to a knee injury, though Ingram's bout with knee inflammation was much less of a concern than Kamara's MCL sprain. Ingram put to rest any concern about his health by practicing fully Monday through Wednesday, while Kamara was a limited participant throughout the week. Assuming Kamara ends up on the inactive list for the fourth straight contest, Ingram will be set to make his third start of the season with the Saints. In his prior two starts, Ingram filled a three-down workhorse role out of the backfield, clearing 70 percent of the Saints' offensive snaps in both contests while averaging 15 carries (4.5 YPC) and 7.5 targets. While Ingram should again be in store for an elevated snap count and usage, he could lose out on some work on the ground -- particularly in goal-line scenarios -- to Taysom Hill, who will take over for Trevor Siemian as the Saints' starting quarterback this week.

To carry load if Kamara sidelined Ingram (knee), who practiced fully again Tuesday, is prepared to handle all the work out of the Saints backfield Thursday against the Cowboys, Amie Just of The New Orleans Times-Pi...
Impact After sitting out a Thanksgiving Day loss to the Bills due to swelling in his knee, Ingram is ready for game action this week, but the same can't be said for Alvin Kamara. On the heels of missing three games in a row with an MCL sprain, Kamara logged back-to-back limited listings on Saints injury reports Monday and Tuesday, but it's unclear yet whether he's trending toward a return. If he's unable to go Thursday, Kamara will cede RB reps to Ingram, who has racked up 62 touches for 337 yards and one rushing TD in four appearances since he rejoined the Saints via trade in late October.

Practices fully Monday Ingram (knee) was a full participant in Monday's practice.
Impact After developing swelling in his knee following the Saints' 40-29 loss to the Eagles in Week 11, Ingram was unable to gain clearance on a short week for a Thanksgiving Day game against the Bills. Though he was being treated as a game-time call leading up to the Saints' eventual 31-6 loss, Ingram was ultimately inactive for the contest along with top running back Alvin Kamara (knee), which allowed Tony Jones (16 carries for 27 yards) to lead an unproductive ground attack. Now that he's practicing fully to begin Week 13 prep, Ingram is in the clear to play Thursday against the Cowboys, but what his role looks like will be contingent on the status of Kamara, who has missed the past three contests. Kamara took a step forward by practicing on a limited basis Monday, but he may need to maintain or increase that level of activity by Wednesday to put himself on a path to reclaim lead duties out of the New Orleans backfield this week.

Takes part in practice Sunday Ingram (knee) participated in the open part of practice Sunday, Mike Triplett of ESPN.com reports.
Impact Sunday's session is unofficial, as the Saints won't release a Week 13 injury report until Monday due to their next game taking place Thursday against the Cowboys. But it's a good sign that both Ingram and Alvin Kamara, who has missed the last three games due to a sprained MCL, are trending in the right direction. If both players are able to return for Thursday's contest, Kamara likely would take on his leading role out of the backfield, with Ingram relegated to complementary work.

Not suiting up Thursday Ingram (knee) is listed as inactive Thursday against the Bills, Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football reports.
Impact With Alvin Kamara missing a third consecutive game due to a sprained MCL, Ingram typically would be in line to cover for him out of the backfield. But Ingram also is dealing with a knee injury, which includes swelling and a meniscus issue, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. Jay Glazer of Fox Sports reported earlier Thursday that Ingram was unlikely to play Week 12, and that has become the Saints' reality upon the release of their inactives. Considering Kamara and Ingram are sidelined, Tony Jones likely will be New Orleans' lead ball carrier, but Dwayne Washington and wide receiver Ty Montgomery should mix in at running back as well.

NFL odds: How to bet Bills vs. Saints, point spread, more
Status not looking good Ingram (knee) is likely to be one of 14 starters that won't suit up for the Saints during Thursday's game against the Bills, Jay Glazer of Fox Sports reports.
Impact Glazer's report falls in line with an earlier report from Ian Rapoport of NFL Network suggesting that Ingram faced an "uphill battle" to gain clearance to play. Tony Jones is likely next in line for work out of the backfield, but Glazer also reported that Ty Montgomery would be moved back to running back from wide receiver to provide additional depth.

Status murky for Thanksgiving game Ingram (knee), who is listed as questionable for Thursday's game against the Bills, "has a chance" to play, but he faces an "uphill battle" to gain clearance ahead of the 8:20 p.m....
Impact If he's active, Ingram will likely be in line for his third consecutive start with Alvin Kamara (knee) already ruled out for the contest, but the former's status for Thanksgiving Day is still firmly up in the air while he contends with his own injury. Though his health concern is less significant than Kamara's MCL sprain, Ingram is dealing with swelling in his knee and a "little bit of a meniscus issue," per Rapoport. Ingram managed only one true limited practice -- he was also estimated as a limited participant on Monday's report -- leading up to Thursday, so the Saints are likely to put him through a workout in the hours prior to kickoff to get a better sense of his availability. In any case, official word on his status is unlikely to arrive until New Orleans releases its inactive list 90 minutes before kickoff. Tony Jones would be the next man up to lead the New Orleans backfield if Ingram doesn't suit up, and the former could still be in store for a larger share of the backfield work than usual even in the event Ingram is cleared to play.

Status up in air for Thursday Ingram (knee) is listed as questionable for Thursday's game versus the Bills.
Impact With Alvin Kamara (knee) ruled out for a third straight contest, Ingram would be the top candidate to fill in for him assuming he's available. But that's far from a certainty after Ingram managed only one limited practice (Wednesday) this week, though he was also estimated as a limited participant on the initial practice report released Monday. Notably, Ingram was present at the start of the media-access portion of Wednesday's session before leaving early, according to Amie Just of The New Orleans Times-Picayune. In his two starts in place of Kamara, Ingram has compiled 40 touches for 221 yards from scrimmage and one touchdown. Such a workload likely would filter down to Tony Jones if Ingram is deemed inactive, with some combination of Dwayne Washington and wide receiver Ty Montgomery available for any lingering backfield reps.
NOVEMBER 24, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Minimal participation, if any Ingram (knee) made a brief appearance at the open portion of Wednesday's practice but then left the field, Amie Just of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.
Impact Meanwhile, backfield mate Alvin Kamara, who also is nursing a knee injury, appears to have sat out practice entirely. The Saints may be left with Tony Jones and special-teams standout Dwayne Washington as the healthy backfield options for Thursday's game against the Bills, though they haven't yet shut the door on either Kamara or Ingram suiting up.

Logs no practice activity again Ingram (knee) was listed as a non-participant on Tuesday's estimated practice report.
Impact After being limited on Monday's practice estimate, Ingram joined top back Alvin Kamara (knee) as a non-participant Tuesday, leaving the statuses of both players in question as Thursday's game against the Bills approaches. Considering Kamara has missed two straight games and hasn't practiced in any fashion since Nov. 17 due to an MCL sprain, he's the less likely of the two backs to suit up Thanksgiving Day, while Ingram's status is murkier. While replacing Kamara as the Saints' lead back for the second game in a row in the team's Week 11 loss to the Eagles, Ingram took 22 touches for 113 yards and played 73 percent of the offensive snaps, but he may have gotten banged up at some point along the way. If both Ingram and Kamara are sidelined Week 12, Tony Jones -- who was reinstated from injured reserve just three days ago -- could be pressed into a high-volume role out of the backfield Thursday.
