49ers coming off bye seek 1st win vs. Colts since 2001

The San Francisco 49ers return from a bye week looking to snap a three-game losing streak when they host the Indianapolis Colts
OCTOBER 21, 2021 • Associated Press
Reclaims lead role Mitchell (shoulder) ran for 43 yards on nine carries against Arizona on Sunday, adding two receptions for 19 yards on two targets.
Impact Although he saw only nine carries, Mitchell functioned as the clear RB1 for the 49ers ahead of fellow rookie Trey Sermon (one carry for seven yards). The reason Mitchell's usage was so low was the high rushing volume claimed by quarterback Trey Lance (16 carries for 89 yards), who draws carries that would otherwise go to the running backs under Jimmy Garoppolo (calf). Coach Kyle Shanahan said Garoppolo will return to the starting lineup once he's physically able, so if Garoppolo returns after the Week 6 bye then Mitchell might claim a higher share of the San Francisco running game than he did under Lance in Week 5.

Cleared for Sunday San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan said Mitchell (shoulder) will play Sunday against Arizona, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports. Mitchell was a full participant in Friday'...
Impact Mitchell missed the 49ers' last two games with the right shoulder injury, allowing rookie Trey Sermon to get a look as the team's lead back. While Sermon bounced back from a poor showing in the Week 3 loss to the Packers with a more productive one (19 carries for 89 yards) last week against the Seahawks, he's still likely to lose at least some work to Mitchell, who briefly took over as the 49ers' top option out of the backfield following Raheem Mostert's (knee) season-ending injury in the opener. Though Mitchell absorbed contact in practices this week and looks healthy again, predicting how the work may break down between him and Sermon is difficult. Shahanan hasn't hinted whether Mitchell will immediately reclaim lead duties in the backfield, or if he'll be eased back into the mix as part of a timeshare with Sermon.

Remains limited, but taking contact Mitchell (shoulder) was limited at Thursday's practice, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Impact Like last week, Mitchell has logged limited sessions so far this week. Unlike last week, he's gotten rid of his blue non-contact jersey, according to Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com. Mitchell continues to work his way back from a shoulder stinger suffered Week 2, which has sidelined him the past two games. If he's able to gain clearance to play Sunday, it's unclear if he'll be able to retake the No. 1 spot on the running back depth chart, or if he'll share the load with Trey Sermon, who has started in Mitchell's place.

Puts in limited practice Mitchell (shoulder) practiced in a limited fashion Wednesday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
Impact After sitting out Week 3, Mitchell logged limited sessions during Week 4 prep, but he donned a non-contact jersey in each one and was deemed inactive this past Sunday against the Seahawks. It's unclear if he ditched the blue jersey, as expected, but he may just be ramping his reps this week as he puts his shoulder stinger further in the rearview mirror. Mitchell has two more practices to go to bump up to all activity, at which point the 49ers will have a better indication of his status for Sunday's game at Arizona. Assuming he suits up, it'll be interesting to see the breakdown of backfield work between Mitchell and Trey Sermon, who has logged back-to-back starts in the former's absence.

Garoppolo injury turns 49ers offense over to Trey Lance

San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan says quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has a chance to play this week after missing the second half with a bruised calf
OCTOBER 4, 2021 • Associated Press
Likely to take contact this week Coach Kyle Shanahan expects Mitchell (shoulder) to practice without a blue non-contact jersey this week, Chris Biderman of The Sacramento Bee reports.
Impact After sitting out Week 3 due to a shoulder stinger, Mitchell was able to return to the practice field last week in a non-contact jersey, logging three limited sessions in the process. It wasn't enough to gain clearance for game action this past Sunday versus the Seahawks, which allowed Trey Sermon to dominate the backfield work for a second straight contest (19 carries for 89 yards on 51 percent snap share). On Wednesday, it appears Mitchell will take one of the final steps in his recovery, but he may need a few sessions to get back to full participation. Once he does, though, he's a decent bet to retain the No. 1 RB spot on the depth chart.

Missing second consecutive game Mitchell (shoulder) is listed as inactive Sunday versus the Seahawks, Keiana Martin of the 49ers' official site reports.
Impact Mitchell's Week 2 shoulder injury was considered "worse than a stinger" by coach Kyle Shanahan at the time. Shanahan noted during Week 4 prep that Mitchell's availability would come down to pain tolerance, and the rookie sixth-round pick won't be able to give it a go just yet. While Mitchell misses a second consecutive game Sunday, Trey Sermon and fullback Kyle Juszczyk likely will handle the bulk of the backfield reps yet again. Beyond that duo, Trenton Cannon and Jacques Patrick are on hand for special-teams work and the occasional rep on offense, if needed.

Not expected to play Sunday Mitchell (shoulder), who is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Seahawks, isn't expected to play in the contest, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Impact Official confirmation of the running back's Week 4 status will arrive once inactives are posted in advance of Sunday's 4:05 p.m. ET kickoff. If Mitchell is indeed unavailable, Trey Sermon would once again be in line for an expanded role in the 49ers' backfield.

49ers could be down 2 more CBs, but hopeful for Kittle

The San Francisco 49ers could be down two more starting cornerbacks for Sunday’s game against Seattle but are holding out hope that star tight end George Kittle can play
OCTOBER 1, 2021 • Associated Press
Hoping to play through pain Mitchell (shoulder) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against Seattle, with coach Kyle Shanahan suggesting the running back's availability could come down to pain toleran...
Impact Shanahan said he doesn't doubt Mitchell's pain tolerance and would consider it "pretty impressive" if the rookie ends up playing, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports. That might be nice for Mitchell to hear, but for fantasy managers it's a sign that the running back could be limited or ineffective even if he's able to suit up. With Mitchell out last week, Trey Sermon took a team-high 10 carries for 31 yards and a touchdown while playing 59 percent of snaps on offense, often giving way to FB Kyle Juszczyk in passing situations. It also is possible that the Niners find a role for Trenton Cannon or Jacques Patrick if Mitchell ends up inactive ahead of Sunday's 4:05 p.m. ET kickoff. Shanahan's comments Friday suggest Mitchell will be treated as a game-time decision -- even if the team isn't optimistic -- after the running back was a limited practice participant Wednesday through Friday.
OCTOBER 1, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Still wearing non-contact jersey Mitchell (shoulder) is wearing a non-contact jersey at Friday's practice, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
Impact This is his third consecutive day in the jersey and likely the third straight day he'll be listed as a limited practice participant. Mitchell's availability for Sunday against Seattle remains uncertain, with a 'questionable' designation and game-time decision looking like a possibility at this point. It remains to be seen how the Niners list Mitchell on their final injury report Friday afternoon.

OCTOBER 1, 2021 • FANDUEL.COM
Logs another limited session Mitchell (shoulder) was limited at Thursday's practice, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Impact For a second session in a row, Mitchell was donning a blue no-contact jersey, according to Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com. The cautious approach from the 49ers makes sense with Mitchell recovering from a right shoulder injury that was considered "worse than a stinger" and already sidelined him for one game. He'll get one more shot to put in a full practice this week before the team likely places a designation on the running back's status for Sunday's contest against the Seahawks. If Mitchell is able to gain clearance to play, he may join Trey Sermon at the top of the RB depth chart, with fullback Kyle Juszczyk mixing in as he did this past Sunday versus the Packers.

Slow starts won't lead to quick change at QB for 49ers

The solution for the San Francisco 49ers' slow starts on offense won’t be a quick change at quarterback
SEPTEMBER 29, 2021 • Associated Press
To be limited Wednesday Mitchell (shoulder) will practice in a limited capacity Wednesday, Keiana Martin of the 49ers' official site reports.
Impact As was hoped for by coach Kyle Shanahan on Monday, Mitchell is getting back on the field Wednesday after sitting out Week 3 with what was termed "worse than a stinger" in his right shoulder. It'll be interesting to see how Mitchell reacts to the increase in work as he attempts to put himself in a position to play this Sunday against the Seahawks. If he's able to return, he'll likely team with Trey Sermon to head the 49ers backfield with both Raheem Mostert (knee) and JaMycal Hasty (ankle) on injured reserve. There's also a chance Kyle Juszczyk remains more involved in the offense in the short term, especially if Mitchell doesn't get the all-clear for Week 4.
