Back-to-back wins get 49ers season back on track
The San Francisco 49ers appeared to hit rock bottom when they were embarrassed at home two weeks ago by backup quarterback Colt McCoy and the Arizona Cardinals

Deemed 'day-to-day'
Mitchell (finger) is considered "day-to-day" by coach Kyle Shanahan, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
Impact
Shanahan relayed the news Monday, one day removed from Mitchell sitting out the 49ers' Week 11 win at Jacksonville due to a broken finger on his right hand. Mitchell underwent surgery on the appendage last Tuesday and didn't practice last week as a result. San Francisco gets back on the field Wednesday as it prepares for a visit from the Vikings on Sunday, but it remains to be seen if Mitchell makes the requisite progress in his recovery. Against the Jags, Jeff Wilson paced the 49ers backfield with 40 (of 69) offensive snaps and 20 touches, while Deebo Samuel (55 and nine, respectively), Kyle Juszczyk (38, one) and Trey Sermon (24, 11) were next up in the pecking order with JaMycal Hasty (ankle) also sidelined.

Inactive in Week 11
Mitchell (finger) is listed as inactive Sunday in Jacksonville, Keiana Martin of the 49ers' official site reports.
Impact
Mitchell emerged from Week 10 action against the Rams with a broken finger on his right hand that required surgery Tuesday. There was some optimism at the time that the rookie sixth-rounder would be available Sunday, but Mitchell didn't practice Wednesday through Friday and entered the weekend as doubtful to suit up. With his status for Week 11 now confirmed, the 49ers backfield will be down both Mitchell and JaMycal Hasty (ankle), leaving Jeff Wilson, Trey Sermon, Trenton Cannon and Kyle Juszczyk as the team's options at running back.

Doubtful for Sunday
Mitchell (finger) is listed as doubtful for Sunday's game in Jacksonville, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Impact
It's been a roller-coaster week in terms of Mitchell's outlook, with early pessimism replaced by optimism Wednesday afternoon when coach Kyle Shanahan said he expected the running back to play. That was one day after Mitchell had surgery on his broken finger, and since then he's been held out of practice and limited to side work with the training staff. Fellow running back JaMyCal Hasty (ankle) is also ruled out for Sunday's game, leaving Jeff Wilson, Trey Sermon, Trenton Cannon and FB Kyle Juszczyk as the backfield options. Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News and David Lombardi of The Athletic both expect Wilson to get the start and presumably most of the carries, while Juszczyk has often handled third-down work when Hasty's been unavailable this year.

Not practicing, looking shaky
Mitchell (finger) isn't practicing Friday, instead working off to the side with a trainer, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
Impact
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Wednesday that he expected Mitchell to bounce back from Tuesday surgery and play in Sunday's game at Jacksonville, while David Lombardi of The Athletic reports that GM John Lynch was less optimistic Friday morning in a radio appearance on KNBR. San Francisco beat writers seem to be more in line with Lynch, as Mitchell has now missed practice Wednesday through Friday. Lynch said the running back likely would be a game-day call, in which case the cross-country trip to Jacksonville becomes helpful to fantasy managers with the 49ers scheduled for 1:00 ET kickoff. Inman suggests Jeff Wilson likely will get the start if Mitchell can't go, with Trey Sermon the probable backup and FB Kyle Juszczyk potentially handling some passing downs. JaMycal Hasty (ankle) appears less likely than Mitchell to play, leaving Juszczyk, Wilson and Trenton Cannon as the passing-down options. Mitchell hasn't handled that role all year, and isn't likely to do so anytime soon given his recent finger surgery.

No practice yet this week
Mitchell (finger) didn't practice Thursday, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
Impact
Mitchell carried the load for the 49ers during a Week 10 win against the Rams, churning out 91 yards on 27 carries. Afterward, it was revealed he suffered a broken finger on his right hand during that contest, which necessitated a procedure to fix it. Mitchell subsequently has been held out of drills this week as he recovers, instead wearing a blue non-contact jersey on a side field, according to Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News. No matter, coach Kyle Shanahan is of the belief Mitchell will be available Week 11 at Jacksonville. "I think he'll go Sunday," Shanahan told Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com on Wednesday. Friday's injury report ultimately will reveal Mitchell's potential to play this weekend, but with JaMycal Hasty (ankle) also hurt at the moment, Jeff Wilson, Trey Sermon and Trenton Cannon are the healthy options in the 49ers backfield.

Impact
Shanahan's comments suggest Tuesday surgery on Mitchell's finger went well, with the running back now hoping to avoid missed time with his latest injury. There is some chance the finger impacts his workload, though it's arguably less of a concern for Mitchell than it would be for other running backs, as he's been targeted just nine times across 270 snaps in seven games. With JaMycal Hasty (ankle) also missing practice Wednesday, the healthy running backs in San Francisco are Jeff Wilson, Trey Sermon and Trenton Cannon.

Impact
Mitchell has taken control of the 49ers backfield in 2021 and is coming off of a season-high 27 carries in Monday's win over the Rams. Unfortunately, it appears he didn't escape the contest unscathed and will be forced to get a pin inserted in the finger, per David Lombardi of The Athletic. Coach Kyle Shanahan remains optimistic Mitchell will be able to practice and protect the finger enough to play Sunday, but the rookie back's status likely won't be confirmed until later in the week. If he's forced to sit, some combination of Jeff Wilson, JaMycal Hasty (ankle), Trenton Cannon and Trey Sermon would handle the carries.

Career high in carries
Mitchell rushed 27 times for 91 yards in Monday night's 31-10 win over the Rams.
Impact
Mitchell had a few nice runs but often didn't find much room up front. While fellow tailback Jeff Wilson didn't either, finishing with 10 carries for 28 yards, wideout Deebo Samuel actually proved to be San Francisco's most efficient runner, taking his five handoffs for 36 yards and a touchdown. On the bright side, the game flow enabled Mitchell to accumulate a season high in carries, slowly adding to his yardage total along the way. Nonetheless, he'll strive for more big plays in his next outing, which appears favorable with the 49ers facing the Jaguars in Week 11.

Set to play Monday
Mitchell (ribs) does not carry an injury designation heading into Monday's divisional matchup with the Rams, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
Impact
Mitchell managed to put together a full practice Saturday, which sets the rookie up to make his first appearance under the Monday night lights. JaMycal Hasty, who won't play Monday due to an ankle injury, was the only other running back besides Mitchell to see snaps over the last three weeks, but expect Jeff Wilson and Trenton Cannon to take some of that playing time, especially with the former finally set to play after a lengthy stay on injured reserve.

Limited at practice again
Mitchell (ribs) was a limited practice participant Friday, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
Impact
Mitchell continues to sport a no-contact jersey and appears on track to play through the rib injury for a second straight week. He had a season high for targets (five) and a season low for carries (eight) in last week's 31-17 loss to the Cardinals, with a 66 percent snap share being right in Mitchell's usual range. It is possible he picks up some extra work Monday if JaMycal Hasty (ankle) is inactive, though it's more likely Jeff Wilson simply takes over Hasty's passing-down role.

ROTOWIRE
Still tending to rib injury
Mitchell (ribs) will be a limited participant at Thursday's practice, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
Impact
Last week, Mitchell logged two limited sessions in three chances as a result of a rib injury, so he seemingly is in better health this time around. He proceeded to earn his typical snap share (66 percent) en route to 13 touches for 79 yards from scrimmage this past Sunday against the Cardinals. Reserve running back JaMycal Hasty handled the remaining 34 percent, turning four touches into 13 total yards, but he isn't slated to practice Thursday due to an ankle issue. The situation could open the door for Jeff Wilson to make his season debut, but as long as Mitchell is available he's the No. 1 running back in San Francisco.

Finds success through air Sunday
Mitchell carried the ball eight times for 36 yards and caught all five of his targets for 43 yards in Sunday's 31-17 loss to the Cardinals.
Impact
The 49ers found themselves in a 17-0 hole early in the second quarter, forcing the team to all but abandon its running game, leading to the least productive day of the season on the ground for Mitchell. The rookie stayed involved in the offense, however, setting career highs in catches, targets and receiving yards. Jeff Wilson was active for the first time all year Sunday but didn't see any touches. It's possible Wilson finds a larger role in Week 10 against the Rams, but Mitchell appears to have a firm hold on the No. 1 job in the San Francisco backfield as long as he stays healthy.
