Three Takeaways: How is Donald Parham Jr. Evolving into a Complete Tight End?
Here's what Donald Parham Jr., Joe Lombardi, and Renaldo Hill said during Thursday's press conference.

Scores in back-to-back games
Parham caught both of his targets for 29 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 47-42 win over the Browns. He also snared a two-point conversion.
Impact
Parham capitalized on a nifty bit of playcalling, scoring from 22 yards out to get the Chargers on the board in the first quarter. Later, the 6-foot-8 target flexed his utility in the red zone, grabbing a two-point conversion to kickstart the team's double-digit comeback. While Parham's specific utility as a red-zone threat might hinder his fantasy value, he's clearly become a focal point in that area and could become more relevant if he's able to earn more consistent playing time.

Snares TD in win
Parham caught two of his three targets for 17 yards and a touchdown in Monday's 28-14 win over the Raiders.
Impact
Parham saw a slight uptick in playing time (56 percent offensive snaps) with the Chargers ahead for the entirety of the contest. The 6-foot-8 behemoth even put his height to good use, capitalizing on his first red zone target of 2021 for just his fourth career touchdown. It's a bit surprising Parham hasn't been utilized more near the goal line given his unmatched size, but given how efficient the Chargers have been in that area over the past three weeks, the 24-year-old might be more of a luxury than a necessity.

First catch of 2021
Parham caught his lone target for 19 yards in Sunday's 30-24 win over the Chiefs.
Impact
Parham has received just two targets through three games, and this was his first reception of the year. The 24-year-old tight end has recorded between 45 and 51 percent of the offensive snaps in each contest this season. Jared Cook has logged at least 56 percent in each matchup.

Returns for preseason finale
Parham (tailbone) returned for Saturday's preseason game against Seattle, catching his lone target for five yards.
Impact
Parham missed the previous game with a tailbone injury, slowing down his momentum after reports from training camp named him as one of the early standouts. He should have a depth role this season, but fantasy utility will be a long shot unless veteran tight end Jared Cook misses time.

Missing time with injury
Parham did not play in Sunday's preseason loss after aggravating a tailbone injury in Friday's practice, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports.
Impact
Parham arguably has been one of the team's biggest training-camp standouts to date, seemingly gaining an innate rapport with quarterback Justin Herbert, particularly in the red zone. The injury, which initially occurred earlier in the week and was aggravated in a jump-ball situation Friday, doesn't seem to be serious, but any lingering issues could allow for 2021 third-round pick Tre' McKitty to play his way into a larger role behind starter Jared Cook.

Bigger role on tap?
Parham is expected to see a bigger role in the offense entering the new season, Gilbert Manzano of The Orange County Register reports.
Impact
Parham thus far has been one of the early standouts through training camp, flashing his athleticism after the catch while also improving as a blocker. The latter will be the key to additional reps for Parham considering the Chargers figure to use veteran tight end Jared Cook almost exclusively as a receiving threat. The 6-foot-8 former XFL tight end already was considered a favorite red-zone threat of quarterback Justin Herbert's, so any sort of additional playing time should only benefit Parham given the obvious rapport with his star QB.

Facing new competition at TE
Parham could face competition for the No. 2 tight end role after the Chargers drafted Tre' McKitty in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports.
Impact
The Chargers seem intent on rostering a strictly blocking tight end, a role some thought the 6-foot-8 Parham was well suited for after an overachieving rookie debut. Much like Virgil Green in past seasons, McKitty seems pigeonholed into the aforementioned role by the Chargers brass, which could cut into Parham's already limited workload. With Jared Cook already established as the team's top pass-catching option at TE, Friday's third-round selection might remove any possibility of Parham having any sort of fantasy value, even in deep redraft leagues.

Snags TD to finish season
Parham caught three of his four targets for 37 yards and a touchdown in the 38-21 win over the Chiefs on Sunday.
Impact
Parham again got the start with Hunter Henry on the reserve/COVID-19 list and put together a second consecutive respectable outing. The former XFL tight end concludes his first campaign in the NFL with 10 receptions for 159 yards and three touchdowns, but the 6-foot-8 behemoth should be poised for at minimum a depth role next year after having to fight for a roster spot entering the 2020 campaign.

Full practice Thursday
Parham (illness) practiced fully Thursday.
Impact
With Hunter Henry still on the reserve/COVID-19 list, Parham could be in line for an expanded role again Week 17 if Henry isn't activated in advance of Sunday's contest against Kansas City. In such a scenario, Parham would continue to work in a tight end timeshare with Stephen Anderson. In the Chargers' Week 16 win over the Broncos, Parham caught two of his three targets for 47 yards, while Anderson chipped in four catches (on six targets) for 48 yards.

Resumes practicing
Parham (illness) was back at practice Thursday, Gilbert Manzano of The Orange County Register reports.
Impact
It remains to be seen if he'll be listed as a full or limited participant, but with Hunter Henry still on the reserve/COVID-19 list as of Thursday, Parham could be in line for added work again Week 17 if Henry isn't activated before Sunday's game against Kansas City.

Misses practice Wednesday
Parham (illness) didn't practice Wednesday.
Impact
With Hunter Henry on the reserve/COVID-19 list and Parham now dealing with an unspecified illness, Stephen Anderson is the Chargers' top healthy tight end at this stage of the week for Sunday's game against Kansas City.

Gets start in win
Parham caught both of his targets for 47 yards in Sunday's 19-16 win over the Chargers.
Impact
Parham got the start in place of Hunter Henry (reserve/COVID-19 list) and played 81 percent of the team's offensive snaps, but the XFL star was overshadowed by Stephen Anderson who nearly led the team in receiving. The lack of targets is slightly troubling considering Parham previously appeared to have the one-up on Anderson for the team's backup TE spot, but the massive difference in snap count should still give fantasy managers some semblance of confidence in using the 6-foot-8 option if Henry is unable to play in the final game of the regular season.

Impact
With Henry looking unlikely to play, Parham and Stephen Anderson are the only tight ends on the roster. The Chargers may promote Matt Sokol from the practice squad before Sunday's game, but Parham still will be the favorite to get targets. The 6-foot-8 tight end had 307 yards and four touchdowns in five XFL games earlier this year, but he's caught just five of 15 targets for 75 yards and two TDs for the Chargers, averaging 12.5 offensive snaps in 11 appearances.
