Jackson Merrill - Goes deep in loss Merrill went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run against Minnesota in a loss Wednesday.
Impact Merrill's two-run blast in the eighth inning didn't have much of an impact on the outcome of the contest, as San Diego still trailed by six runs after the long ball. However, it snapped an eight-game homerless stretch for the rookie and pushed him to 18 home runs and 71 RBI on the campaign. Merrill is working on a modest six-game hitting streak during which he's batted .375 (9-for-24) with five extra-base hits and seven RBI.

Donovan Solano - Swats homer in loss Solano went 1-for-2 with a solo home run in Wednesday's loss to the Twins.
Impact Solano entered as a pinch hitter for Jurickson Profar in the fifth inning after the Twins built a 10-0 lead and homered to put the Padres on the board. He's been effective in a reserve role for San Diego this season, slashing .309/.360/.440 with six home runs, 28 RBI, 25 runs and a stolen base over 225 plate appearances.

Matt Waldron - Continues rough stretch Waldron (7-11) took the loss against Minnesota on Wednesday, allowing 10 runs on 12 hits and one walk while striking out three batters over 4.1 innings.
Impact Waldron managed to get through two scoreless frames before being tagged for a run in the third. He then fell apart in the fourth, as the Twins pounded him for seven runs on seven hits, including two doubles and a homer. Waldron was allowed to return for the fifth frame but retired just one batter before he was pulled after giving up another run, and the final tally against him came after he departed. The knuckleballer has been knocked around in each of his past three starts, giving up a combined 22 runs over 14.1 frames. HIs season ERA has jumped from 3.79 ERA to 4.79 due to the rough patch.

Impact This is a procedural move in order to free up a spot on the 40-man roster, as Tatis' absence just reached 60 days. Mason McCoy - Returns to big leagues The Padres selected McCoy's contract from Triple-A El Paso on Wednesday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Impact McCoy will reach the big leagues for the second time in his career after previously getting a cup of coffee with the Blue Jays late in the 2023 season. The 29-year-old has enjoyed a decent season at El Paso with a .260/.329/.382 slash line and 25 stolen bases over 432 plate appearances, though it comes with the caveat that he's much older than most of his competition and has done most of his damage at hitter-friendly ballparks. McCoy is capable of playing both middle-infield spots and will give the Padres another option at shortstop while Ha-Seong Kim (shoulder) is on the shelf, though Tyler Wade looks like he'll be first in line to replace Kim in the everyday lineup.

Impact Wade is in the lineup for a third straight game, as the Padres appear to have settled on him as their primary replacement at shortstop for Ha-Seong Kim (shoulder), who was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday. Though he is a competent defender in the middle infield, Wade shouldn't be expected to provide much fantasy value other than the occasional stolen base while he's getting regular playing time. He's batting .231 with no home runs in 138 plate appearances with the Padres in 2024 and is a lifetime .219/.295/.291 hitter over parts of eight seasons in the big leagues.

Impact Edwards elected free agency after being outrighted off the Padres' 40-man roster earlier this month, but he's ultimately returned on a new deal. Robert Suarez - Earns 29th save Suarez picked up another save Tuesday night against the Twins after pitching a clean ninth inning and striking out a batter.
Impact Suarez entered in the ninth for the second straight game and converted another save chance. He didn't have to work as hard to pick up three outs in this one after needing just nine pitches compared to 22 Monday night. He's now converted six saves in a row and sits fourth in baseball with 29 saves for the year. The 33-year-old flamethrower owns a 1.79 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and 48:10 K:BB in 50.1 innings this season.

MartĂ­n PĂ©rez - Takes no-decision Tuesday Perez did not factor into the decision in Tuesday's win over the Twins, allowing three runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out two over 4.2 innings.
Impact Perez had his worst outing since being acquired by the Padres but still pitched well enough to keep them in the game. He blanked the Twins through three innings before Ryan Jeffers took him deep in the fourth to put them ahead 2-1. Perez then found himself with bases loaded and nobody out in the fifth. Things could've taken a turn for the worst but was helped out on a sacrifice fly to left that turned into a double play after Austin Martin was thrown out at home in a rundown. Perez has given up a home run in each of his last four starts but has been an ideal fill-in as the Padres fifth pitcher while they wait for Yu Darvish (personal) to make his way back to the team. For the year, Perez owns a 4.67 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 86:36 K:BB in 106 innings. He lines up to face the Mets on Sunday to complete a two-start week.

Manny Machado - Homers in comeback victory Machado went 1-for-4 with a two-run homer in Tuesday's win over the Twins.
Impact Machado's lone hit of the night was a big one, as he brought the Padres level in the seventh with a two-run blast and also forced Bailey Ober out of the game. He's now reached 20 home runs for a ninth consecutive season (not including the shortened pandemic season) and is six home runs away from being the Padres' all-time leader in that category. Machado is slashing .269/.319/.450 with 43 extra-base hits, 73 RBI, 61 runs, six steals and a 34:96 BB:K in 496 plate appearances this year.
