Brandon Lockridge - Slated for short-side platoon in LF Lockridge is expected to open the season on the short side of a platoon in left field with Jason Heyward, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
Impact The speedy Lockridge won a spot on the Padres' Opening Day roster but hitting .364 with seven stolen bases during Cactus League play. His stolen base potential could make him relevant in fantasy leagues if he ever receives enough starts, but for now Lockridge's playing time projects to be limited.

Jackson Merrill - Belts fourth long ball of spring Merrill went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in Sunday's Cactus League victory versus the Diamondbacks.
Impact Merrill opened the scoring in the contest with a 411-foot, two-run shot to right field in the first inning. The 21-year-old has slashed .244/.244/.556 this spring with four home runs and 10 RBI over 45 plate appearances. He hasn't yet taken a walk, but Merrill posted just a 5.0 percent walk rate as a rookie last year and still finished with an .826 OPS and a second-place finish in National League Rookie of the Year voting, so his aggressiveness at the plate shouldn't be a cause for concern.

Jose Iglesias - Makes Opening Day roster Iglesias will be a part of the Padres' Opening Day roster Thursday versus Atlanta, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
Impact Iglesias will officially make the team's initial 26-man roster after signing a minor-league deal with San Diego on March 5. The 35-year-old went 5-for-25 with a double, two RBI, a run scored and four strikeouts over 11 games with the Padres this spring. Iglesias will likely operate in a utility role with San Diego to open the season, serving as a backup option to Jake Cronenworth, Manny Machado and Xander Bogaerts in the infield.

Yuli Gurriel - Set to make roster The Padres informed Gurriel on Sunday that he's made the Opening Day roster, Francys Romero of BeisbolFR.com reports.
Impact The veteran slugger still needs to be officially added to the 26-man and 40-man rosters, but he's set to begin the campaign with the big club. Gurriel had a .241/.338/.296 slash line in 18 regular-season games with Kansas City last season, but he carried a hot bat during spring training with an .828 OPS in 14 contests.

Manny Machado - Belts second spring homer Machado went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in a Cactus League win against the Reds on Saturday.
Impact Machado accounted for the only run in the contest with a 389-foot solo shot in the seventh inning. It was the veteran slugger's second long ball of the spring, and just his third RBI. Machado is slashing a modest .200/.250/.433 during the exhibition slate, but unlike last spring, he's been able to play the field regularly. He was limited to DH duties during most of the first month of the regular season last year after undergoing offseason elbow surgery, but that issue is long behind him, and Machado is slated to start at the hot corner on Opening Day next Thursday.

Dylan Cease - Shines again in final spring outing Cease pitched 5.2 scoreless innings in a Cactus League game against Cincinnati on Saturday, allowing two hits and striking out nine batters without issuing any walks.
Impact Cease was dominant in the outing, as he induced 18 whiffs on 74 pitches and topped out at 99 mph on the radar gun. The veteran righty finished his spring in superb form, tossing 10 scoreless frames and striking out 17 batters over his final two starts. Michael King has been named the Opening Day starter for San Diego, so Cease will pitch in the team's second contest of the regular season, which will take place Friday, March 28 at home against Atlanta.
MARCH 23, 2025 • ROTOWIRE
Kyle Hart - Falters in audition for rotation Hart pitched 4.2 innings in a Cactus League game against Cleveland on Saturday, allowing six runs on five hits and no walks while striking out four batters.
Impact Hart was tagged by Carlos Santana for a two-run home run in the first inning and then served up another two-run shot to Brayan Rocchio in the fourth. The southpaw did manage to retire nine straight batters at one point between the two long balls, but this was nonetheless not a very promising performance. Hart is competing for one of two Opening Day rotation spots, with Randy Vasquez and Stephen Kolek the other pitchers in the equation. Among the three, Hart has been the least impressive this spring -- he has a 9.39 ERA and 1.57 WHIP to Vasquez's 3.38 ERA and 1.88 WHIP and Kolek's 2.19 ERA and 1.14 WHIP. However, it's worth noting that Hart also has only two Cactus League appearances under his belt, as he was set back early during the exhibition slate due to the flu.
MARCH 23, 2025 • ROTOWIRE
Wes Benjamin - Reassigned to minor-league camp Benjamin was reassigned to minor-league camp Saturday.
Impact Benjamin has pitched in the KBO for the last two seasons but returned stateside on a minor-league deal this winter. He walked seven across six innings this spring, so it's not particularly surprising that he missed out on a roster spot.
MARCH 23, 2025 • ROTOWIRE
Tirso Ornelas - Ticketed for minors Ornelas was optioned to minor-league camp Saturday.
Impact Ornelas had a chance to make the Padres' roster in a corner outfield spot, but the additions of Connor Joe and Jason Heyward made his path more difficult. Ornelas performed well by collecting 15 hits across 51 at-bats -- six of which went for extra bases -- so he should be in San Diego at some point in 2025.
MARCH 23, 2025 • ROTOWIRE
Brett Sullivan - Designated for assignment Sullivan was designated for assignment by the Padres on Saturday.
Impact San Diego's catching situation is ambiguous, but Sullivan lost out on a roster spot to a combination of Martin Maldonado, Elias Diaz and Luis Campusano. Sullivan has accrued 103 plate appearances across the last two seasons in the majors and could continue to serve as organizational depth for the club.
MARCH 23, 2025 • ROTOWIRE
Mason McCoy - Has contract selected The Padres selected McCoy's contract Saturday.
Impact McCoy entered spring training in competition for a utility role, and he has seemingly earned a roster spot after slashing .273/.368/.515 across 33 at-bats in Cactus League action. He isn't likely to be a regular in the lineup but should be a primary backup at most infield positions.

Sean Reynolds - Sheds walking boot Reynolds (foot) is no longer wearing a walking boot and and is scheduled to ramp up his throwing in early April, per MLB.com.
Impact Reynolds was diagnosed with a stress reaction in his right foot in late February, but a recent MRI revealed "significant healing" in the affected extremity. As such, the righty reliever is slated to began building back up in around two weeks if he doesn't experience any setbacks. Reynolds won't be ready for Opening Day, but he could be a factor in San Diego's bullpen sometime in May.
