Shows shaky control in loss Suarez dropped to 5-4 after giving up three runs on eight hits and four walks while striking out two over 4.2 innings in Wednesday's 4-2 loss to the Diamondbacks.

Impact Suarez had been solid in his first three starts since sliding into the Philadelphia rotation, but a matchup with the 40-81 Diamondbacks surprisingly tripped up the left-hander. Though he did well to keep the ball on the ground -- Suarez only allowed one flyball to the 25 batters he faced -- the free passes and an untimely sequencing of hits ultimately led to his demise. On a more positive note, Suarez built up to 86 pitches Wednesday, so he could handle a more traditional starter's workload moving forward. He tentatively lines up to make his next turn during the Phillies' two-game home series with Tampa Bay on Aug. 24 or 25.

Effective again as starter Suarez allowed one earned run on three hits and two walks while striking out four across 4.1 innings Thursday against the Dodgers. He did not factor into the decision.

Impact Suarez had another short outing from an innings perspective, and he's now completed three, 2.2 and 4.1 innings in his three appearances as a starter. However, he progressed toward a normal workload from a pitch count perspective, as he fired 82 total pitches -- 48 of which went for strikes. Though he's allowed only one earned run across 10 innings as a starter, Suarez has handed out six free passes in that span. That will be an area he'll need to improve upon in order to continue preventing runs while also getting him deeper into starts.

Impact The left-hander chewed through his pitch count quickly and got the hook after 61 pitches (33 strikes), leaving him well short of qualifying for a win. Suarez continues to be very effective and sports a 0.98 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and 47:18 K:BB through 46 innings, but until he gets stretched out further -- or gets moved back into a high-leverage bullpen role -- his fantasy value is firmly capped.

Impact The Phillies have varied Suarez's role this season, but the club appears committed to trying him out as a starter at this point. In his first start of season Monday, Suarez blanked the Nationals over three no-hit innings, allowing only one baserunner on the day. Because he's still building up after recently transitioning from the bullpen, Suarez is expected to be capped at around 60 pitches Saturday. Even if he pitches well, Suarez could be hard pressed to come away with the win if he's able to work only four or five frames.

Impact Whether it's closing or starting, the 25-year-old southpaw continues to be brilliant. Suarez needed only 33 pitches (18 strikes) to record nine outs in his first start of the year, and he's been tagged for earned runs only once in 11 appearances since the beginning of July. On the season, he sports a 1.04 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and 43:15 K:BB through 43.1 innings, but it may take another couple outings before he's stretched out enough to qualify for a win in his new role.
