Dane Myers - Sitting amid slump
Myers is not in the lineup Tuesday versus the Rays.
Impact
Myers got off to a nice start upon his initial promotion to the Marlins in early July, but he's gone 0-for-16 with six strikeouts and zero walks over his last four games. Jon Berti, Jesus Sanchez and Bryan De La Cruz will start across the outfield Tuesday.

Nick Fortes - Takes seat Tuesday
Fortes is not in the lineup Tuesday versus the Rays.
Impact
Jacob Stallings will do the catching for the Marlins and hit eighth. He and Fortes have basically been splitting starts at the position and neither has produced much offensively.

Garrett Cooper - Back after illness
Cooper (illness) is back in the lineup Tuesday against the Rays.
Impact
Cooper will start at first base and bat third in the Marlins' series opener versus Tampa Bay after getting scratched from Sunday's series finale against the Rockies due to a mild illness. He holds a .733 OPS with 12 homers and 44 RBI through 78 games this season.

Sixto Sánchez - Tosses bullpen session
Sanchez (shoulder) completed a 19-pitch bullpen session Friday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
Impact
While the side session represents a step forward after Sanchez had been limited to playing catch off flat ground heading into the All-Star break, the 24-year-old right-hander still doesn't appear especially close to pitching in a game. Sanchez has endured a slow buildup since undergoing arthroscopic shoulder surgery in October, which came after he had surgery in July 2021 to repair a capsule tear in the same shoulder. He'll likely continue to throw side sessions for a few more weeks before he advances to facing hitters in live batting practice or simulated games.

Andrew Nardi - Completes side session
Nardi (triceps) threw a 25-pitch bullpen session Friday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
Impact
McPherson notes that while Nardi didn't face hitters, he structured the bullpen session to simulate a multi-inning appearance. The left-hander is expected to head out on a minor-league rehab assignment in the near future and might be ready to return from the 15-day injured list as soon as next week.

José Castillo - Traded to Miami
Miami acquired Castillo from the Padres on Tuesday for cash considerations and optioned him to Triple-A Jacksonville.
Impact
Castillo was designated for assignment by San Diego last week, having been lit up for four earned runs while recording only one out in his lone major-league appearance of the season back on July 4. The 27-year-old left-hander hasn't had success at the MLB level since 2018.

Jon Berti - Heating up
Berti went 1-for-3 with a double in Sunday's extra-inning win over the Rockies.
Impact
Getting the start at shortstop and batting sixth, Berti extended his current hitting streak to six games, a stretch in which he's gone 10-for-17 (.588) with two stolen bases and four runs scored. The 33-year-old has slipped back into a super-utility role with the Marlins mostly healthy -- over the last five games, he's started twice at shortstop and once each at third base and in left field -- and he seems to be more comfortable with that assignment. On the season, Berti's slashing .292/.335/.372 in 271 plate appearances with two homers, 11 steals, 18 RBI and 35 runs.

Luis Arraez - Collects trio of hits
Arraez went 3-for-4 with one double, two RBI and one run scored in Sunday's victory over Colorado.
Impact
Arraez notched his second consecutive multi-hit effort Sunday, plating Nick Fortes with an RBI double in the sixth and then notching a walk-off single in the bottom of the tenth to give Miami the win. Over his last eight appearances, Arraez is batting .371 with seven RBI and two runs scored.

A.J. Puk - Blows another save
Puk blew the save in Sunday's 3-2 win over the Rockies. He allowed one run on two hits and one walk while striking out two over two-thirds of an inning.
Impact
Puk surrendered a game-tying solo homer to Randal Grichuk in the ninth inning, marking Puk's fifth blown save of 2023 and his third in his last four opportunities. Though manager Skip Schumaker said Friday that Puk would remain the Marlins' closer for the time being. Sunday's blown save could be enough for Schumaker to try out other options at closer. If that were to be the case, Tanner Scott would likely be the first in line for save opportunities considering his recent success and overall 2.81 ERA through 48 innings.

Jesus Luzardo - Dominant in no-decision
Luzardo did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing one run on four hits and two walks over seven innings against Colorado. He struck out 13.
Impact
Though Luzardo didn't get enough run support to pick up a victory, he was incredible in the no-decision and set a career-high in K's with 13. The outing also marked his sixth quality start in his last seven appearances, a stretch in which he owns a 1.48 ERA and a 55:11 K:BB through 42.2 innings. Luzardo will have another chance to build on his already impressive 2023 resume in his next start, which is projected to come against the Tigers, who average the third-fewest runs scored per game in MLB.

Garrett Cooper - Scratched with illness
Cooper was scratched from the Sunday's lineup against Colorado due to an illness, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.

Johnny Cueto - Dominant over six frames
Cueto did not factor into the decision Saturday, allowing one run on two hits and one walk over six innings in a 4-3 loss against the Rockies. He struck out eight.
Impact
Cueto had it going early, retiring the first eight batters he faced, five by way of strikeout, as the Marlins took a 1-0 lead. The veteran righty would only allow four baserunners over his six innings of work while recording a season-high eight strikeouts. Cueto had previously recorded just one strikeout through his only two appearances coming into Saturday and is still searching for his first win following the impressive outing.
