Granted release
Canha has been granted his release by the Rangers on Thursday, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.
Impact
Canha will get a chance for a fresh start after opening the 2026 season at the Rangers' extended spring training site. He has yet to play in any contests so far this year. The veteran has appeared in games with the Mets, Brewers, Tigers, Giants and Royals over the last three seasons, and he'll look for another major-league opportunity in the near future.

Splits with Texas
Canha requested his release from the Rangers on Thursday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
Impact
Canha is seeking a big-league opportunity elsewhere after signing a minor-league contract with Texas in February. The 37-year-old has opened the 2026 campaign with Triple-A Round Rock, but he has yet to appear in a contest. Canha produced a .212 average with one home run, six RBI and nine runs scored over 113 at-bats in 46 regular-season contests with the Royals in 2025, and there's a good chance another squad will give in a shot with their major-league roster this season.

Staying in organization
Canha told the Rangers on Wednesday that he will remain with the organization for the time being, despite not winning a spot on the Opening Day roster, Evan Grant of The Dallas Mor...
Impact
After he was unable to beat out Andrew McCutchen for a spot on the Opening Day squad as a reserve corner outfielder/designated hitter, Canha initially informed the Rangers that he didn't plan on reporting to Triple-A Round Rock. However, after evaluating his options, Canha appears to have had a change of heart and will stick around in the organization, at least temporarily. It's unclear if he intends to head to Round Rock when the Triple-A season gets underway Friday, or if he'll simply remain at extended spring training in Arizona.

Impact
Canha, who slashed .300/.333/.525, indicated he does not intend to go to Triple-A but will stay with the Rangers through their final exhibition game Tuesday. He will pursue another major league job.

Responds to competition
Canha started in left field and went 1-for-3 with a run scored in Monday's spring game against the Padres.
Impact
Canha, who hit safely for a fourth straight Cactus League games, seemingly has responded to the Rangers' recent signing of Andrew McCutchen. The two veterans are competing for a spot as a right-handed hitting complement to Joc Pederson at designated hitter and as a depth outfielder. Canha has more recent experience in the outfield, having started 133 games there over the past three seasons compared to McCutchen's 20.

Joins Texas on camp deal
Canha signed Sunday with the Rangers on a minor-league contract that includes an invitation to major-league spring training.
Impact
The 37-year-old first baseman/outfielder will compete for a spot on the Opening Day roster this spring, with a strong performance in the Cactus League perhaps being his ticketed to securing a short-side platoon role with Texas. Before being cut loose by the Royals in August, Canha saw action in 46 games for Kansas City last season, slashing .212/.272/.265 with one home run and six RBI across 125 plate appearances.

DFA'd by Kansas City
The Royals activated Canha (elbow) from the 10-day injured list Monday and designated him for assignment.
Impact
Canha had played nine rehab games as he comes back from left elbow epicondylitis, but while he is healthy, the Royals have decided they don't have a spot for him on their active roster. The 36-year-old should pass through waivers before becoming a free agent. Canha has slashed only .212/.272/.265 in 46 contests this season.

The Royals activated Canha (elbow) from the 10-day injured list Monday and designated him for assignment.
Impact

Progressing in rehab
Canha (elbow) went 1-for-2 with a hit by pitch and RBI with Double-A Northwest Arkansas on Sunday.
Impact
Canha made his third rehab appearance with Double-A Northwest Arkansas on Sunday as he works his way back from left elbow epicondylitis. He's 3-for-11 with a homer and five RBI so far during the assignment. Before landing on the injured list July 8, the veteran was batting .212/.272/.265 with just four extra-base hits and six RBI over 46 games. Canha's versatility could help him carve out at-bats, but steady playing time is unlikely with Mike Yastrzemski and Randal Grichuk joining the roster and Jac Caglianone (hamstring) nearing a return.
