GAME LOG

INJURIES

Cruises to win Patino (3-3) earned the win Saturday against the White Sox, allowing two runs on five hits in six innings, striking out five while walking one.
Impact The innings total tied a career high for the 21-year-old, who's flashed potential in his 12 outings this season despite a modest 4.53 ERA. He gave up a solo homer to Seby Zavala in the third and allowed another run on an RBI single by Eloy Jimenez in the sixth, but he didn't have to work out of too many jams throughout the game and came away with his second career quality start. He'll likely return to the mound during next weekend's three-game series in Baltimore.

Poor control in short start Patino took a no-decision in Sunday's 5-4 loss to the Twins after working three innings and giving up two runs on two hits and five walks while striking out two.
Impact Patino didn't face a hard cap on his workload in his ninth start of the season, but thanks in large part to the season-high five walks, the Rays elected to pull him early after he needed 69 pitches to record nine outs. The rookie southpaw had been more efficient over his prior five outings -- he worked no fewer than five innings in any of those starts -- so fantasy managers shouldn't be too discouraged by the poor showing in Minnesota. That said, Patino doesn't make for a particularly comfortable lineup option in weekly leagues with his next start expected to come Friday versus the powerful White Sox offense.

Impact The young right-hander's runs all came on home runs, with Hunter Renfroe's fourth-inning blast, which came with two aboard, doing most of the damage. Patino has now gone at least six frames in two of his last three starts, but he's also allowed a pair of round trippers in each of his last two trips to the mound. Now sporting a 4.64 ERA and 1.24 WHIP across 42.2 innings, Patino will look for even better results and his first win since July 29 when he likely takes the hill early next week.

Stuck with loss Tuesday Patino (2-3) took the loss Tuesday as the Rays fell 4-2 to the Mariners, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out three.
Impact The rookie didn't pitch poorly, but a pair of solo shots in the third inning by Abraham Toro and Jarred Kelenic proved to be the difference in the game. Patino tossed 65 of 100 pitches for strikes, and that workload bodes well for his fantasy value down the stretch if he can become a little more efficient. On the season, the 21-year-old has a 4.42 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 39:12 K:BB through 36.2 innings.

Delivers six strong innngs Patino (2-2) allowed three hits and two walks while striking out eight across six scoreless innings to earn the win Thursday against the Yankees.
Impact Patino dominated the Yankees lineup throughout this start and out-pitcher Gerrit Cole to earn the win. Patino flashed great swing-and-miss stuff, inducing 19 swinging strikes across 97 total pitches. With Rich Hill out of the picture, it's reasonable to project that Patino will remain in a starting role barring the Rays' acquiring another starter prior to the trade deadline. As both a starter and reliever this season, Patino has a 4.26 ERA with 36 strikeouts across 31.2 innings of work.

Another start awaits Patino is scheduled to start Thursday's game against the Yankees.
Impact After getting called up from Triple-A Durham last week to make a start in Cleveland, Patino initially wasn't certain to stick in the rotation beyond that outing. Even though he delivered so-so results in a no-decision (four runs allowed on five hits and three walks over 5.1 innings), Patino will maintain his spot in the rotation after the Rays shipped starter Rich Hill off to the Mets. The Rays will eventually get Chris Archer (forearm) and Tyler Glasnow (elbow) back from the injured list, so Patino will still need to churn out respectable starts in order to stay in the rotation for the rest of the season.

JULY 23, 2021 • Associated Press
Iffy performance in no-decision Patino allowed four runs on five hits and three walks with four strikeouts in 5.1 innings in a no-decision versus Cleveland on Thursday.
Impact Patino was in line for the loss when he exited the contest, but the offense got him off the hook by rallying to tie the game in the ninth inning. The right-hander's ERA rose to 5.26 with a 1.25 WHIP and 28:8 K:BB across 25.2 innings this season. Considering manager Kevin Cash suggested Patino would need a strong performance to stick in the rotation going forward, it wouldn't be surprising to see the 21-year-old end up either in the bullpen or back at Triple-A Durham after an unimpressive start.

Called up to start Thursday The Rays recalled Patino from Triple-A Durham ahead of his scheduled start Thursday in Cleveland.
Impact Since the All-Star break, the Rays haven't dealt with any new injuries to any starting pitchers, but manager Kevin Cash acknowledged that he will leave the door open for Patino to stick around as a member of the big-league rotation if he pitches well Thursday. Patino has submitted a 3.07 ERA while striking out 41 over 29.1 innings at Triple-A this season, but he was hit hard in his last cameo in the big leagues July 2, serving up seven runs (five earned) on seven hits and a walk over 5.1 innings to take a loss against the Blue Jays.

Slated to start Thursday Patino will be called up from Triple-A Durham to start Thursday's game against Cleveland, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact Patino has been at Durham since July 2, but he'll join the Rays' taxi squad ahead of Wednesday's series finale versus the Orioles. He's posted a 4.87 ERA and 1.18 WHIP in 20.1 innings across six appearances (four starts) with the major-league club this year, and manager Kevin Cash said that the right-hander will have the chance to remain in the rotation going forward, depending on how he fares Thursday.

JULY 3, 2021 • Associated Press
Sent down after start Patino was optioned to Triple-A Durham on Friday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact Patino started Friday's game against the Blue Jays and allowed seven runs (five earned) on seven hits and one walk while striking out five in 5.1 innings to take the loss. He now carries a 1-2 record in the majors this year and will head back to the Triple-A club following his lackluster start. It's not yet clear whether he could be called back up to make another start prior to the All-Star break.
JULY 3, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Promoted for Friday's start Patino was recalled from Triple-A Durham and will start Friday against the Blue Jays.
Impact The right-hander delivered five scoreless frames in each of his past three starts for Durham and will rejoin the Rays for his sixth big-league outing of the year. Patino has pitched well in the majors this season with a 3.60 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 19:4 K:BB across 15 innings.
JULY 2, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Expected to start Friday Patino is expected to be called up by the Rays to start Friday against the Blue Jays, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact Patino has been pitching well for Triple-A Durham, throwing 17 straight scoreless innings. Between his recent form and the injuries to Tyler Glasnow (elbow) and Josh Fleming (calf), Patino could stick with the big-league club if he carries over his strong performance from the minors. Patino has thrown five innings in each of his last three starts, so he could work long enough to earn a win if he can hold the Blue Jays' offense in check.
