INJURIES

Sharp as opener Patino allowed no hits and one walk while striking out three in 2.2 scoreless innings in Sunday's loss to the Blue Jays. He didn't factor into the decision.
Impact Patino made his team debut as Sunday's opener, and he tossed 42 pitches before primary pitcher Josh Fleming entered the game. Patino posted a 5.19 ERA in 17.1 innings with the Padres last year but could earn more opportunities with the Rays if he continues to pitch effectively.

Called up ahead of Rays debut The Rays recalled Patino from their taxi squad Sunday, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports.
Impact Patino will be serving as an opener ahead of primary pitcher Josh Fleming in the Rays' series finale Sunday versus the Blue Jays. As a 20-year-old with the Padres last season, Patino started in one of his 11 appearances and posted a 5.19 ERA, 1.85 WHIP and a 21:14 K:BB in 17.1 innings.

Ryu scheduled to start for Blue Jays at Rays

The Blue Jays will start Hyun Jin Ryu on Sunday and the Rays are expected to counter with Luis Patino

To serve as opener Patino will serve as the team's opener Sunday against the Blue Jays, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact It's unclear exactly how long Patino will pitch. Josh Fleming will handle the majority of the workload. Patino made his major-league debut in 2020 with the Padres and posted a 5.19 ERA with a 21:14 K:BB across 17.1 innings.
APRIL 25, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Added to taxi squad Patino was added to the Rays' taxi squad Saturday and is expected to be active for Sunday's game against the Blue Jays, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact Patino was sent down by the Rays in mid-March, but he could be in line to make his team debut in Sunday's series finale. The right-hander made his major-league debut with the Padres last year and posted a 5.19 ERA and 21:14 K:BB in 17.1 innings across 11 appearances (one start). Patino will likely join the bullpen once he's added to the Rays' big-league roster, but he could be an option to serve as a starter at some point this year.
APRIL 24, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Won't make Opening Day roster Patino was optioned off the active roster Tuesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact Patino is part of a large group of players who could start games for the Rays this season, but he won't be starting any right away. It's not particularly surprising to see him open the year in the minors, as he'd only made two starts at the Double-A level prior to last year when he jumped to the big leagues and didn't look entirely ready. He posted a 5.19 ERA and 1.85 WHIP while walking 16.5 percent of the batters he faced in his 17.1-inning debut. He could certainly still fill an important role for the Rays this year, but that won't come right away.

Scoreless frame in first start Patino logged his first start of Grapefruit League play Wednesday against the Twins and fired a clean first inning.
Impact The promising right-hander now has a pair of scoreless spring frames on his ledger in as many appearances, and he's allowed just one hit while recording a strikeout. Patino has consistently impressed with his location since spring training began, with both his fastball and slider distinguishing themselves early. While the Rays starting rotation appears set barring injury, the 21-year-old could be making a case to stick on the Opening Day roster in some form.

Grabs spring victory Patino, who was credited with the victory in Thursday's Grapefruit League win over the Twins, impressed with his velocity and location during his one inning, Adam Berry of MLB.com...
Impact The promising right-hander consistently kept his fastball in the mid-90s and threw seven of his 10 pitches for strikes during the second inning. Patino did work around a hit and gave up some loud contact, but battery mate Francisco Mejia, who caught Patino during their time together in the Padres organization, came away impressed with his teammate's confidence. Meanwhile, pitching coach Kyle Snyder added that the 21-year-old's changeup and slider are excellent complements to his formidable fastball.

Next up for Rays: Thursday at Twins, 1:05 Ryan Yarbrough and Luis Patino are among the pitchers slated for duty in Fort Myers.

Impresses in live BP Patino was one of the pitchers that caught manager Kevin Cash's eye during live batting practice Friday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact Patino was lauded by Cash for what the Rays skipper labeled as "constant strike-throwing" during the session, with the right-hander landing just one ball outside the strike zone. Patino is striving to earn a starting rotation spot during spring training while largely relying on his elite fastball and slider, and Cash noted Friday that the young pitcher's commitment to pounding the zone has a chance to eventually make him "special" if he can sustain it over the long haul.

Gunning for rotation spot Patino, who was acquired in the Blake Snell trade with the Padres this offseason, will be given a legitimate opportunity to earn a spot in the Rays' starting rotation during spring...
Impact Bowden lists Patino as one of two Rays candidates for rookies most likely to make Opening Day rosters, although he adds it wouldn't necessarily be a surprise to see the hard-throwing right-hander open up at Triple-A Durham due to service-time considerations. In addition to his impressive pitch arsenal, Patino has some big-league experience to fall back on, having logged 14 total appearances, including the playoffs, for the Padres in 2020. Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times notes Patino's upper 90s fastball and wicked slider make the 21-year-old one of the most intriguing young prospects to monitor in spring training, especially with manager Kevin Cash's out-of-the-box track record with the management of his staff and the durability questions that plague the team's multiple veteran offseason pitching additions.

Trade in place with Rays Patino is set to be traded from the Padres to the Rays in exchange for left-hander Blake Snell, pending a review of medical records, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports.
Impact Patino made his major-league debut in 2020, posting a 5.19 ERA and 21:14 K:BB over 17.1 innings during 11 appearances (one start). He was included on the team's postseason roster, and he'll now be the top prospect in Sunday's blockbuster trade. The right-hander has an above-average 96.8 mph average fastball velocity and will continue his development in Tampa Bay.

Joins big club for postseason The Padres included Patino on their 28-man roster for the wild-card series with the Cardinals that begins Wednesday.
Impact The Padres added Patino and catcher Luis Campusano to the roster as replacements for starting pitchers Dinelson Lamet (biceps) and Mike Clevinger (elbow), who will both be held out of the series. Chris Paddack is scheduled to start Game 1 while Zach Davies starts Game 2, leaving Patino as an option to eat innings in a potential Game 3, which would likely be a bullpen outing.

Earns win in relief Patino (1-0) pitched a scoreless inning, walking one and fanning two, two earn the win Friday against the Giants in Game 2 of a doubleheader.
Impact Patino has given up one or fewer runs in eight of his last nine appearances out of the bullpen, posting a 3.29 ERA with a 1.68 WHIP in 13.2 innings during that span. He has pitched just three times this month, though, so he might not play a role for the Padres during their upcoming postseason run.

Returns to alternate site The Padres optioned Patino to their alternate training site Sunday.
Impact Patino's demotion doesn't come as much of a surprise after he struggled in his spot start Saturday against the Mariners in place of the injured Mike Clevinger (biceps). He lasted 1.2 innings in the Padres' loss, giving up one run on three hits and two walks while striking out three in a no-decision. Though Clevinger appears on track to rejoin the rotation Wednesday, San Diego will have a need for a spot starter Friday for one half of the team's doubleheader with the Giants. The Padres could designate Patino as their 29th man for the twin bill and bring him back to start one of those contests.
SEPTEMBER 20, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Struggles in spot start Patino allowed a run on three hits and two walks while striking out three over 1.2 innings in a no-decision versus the Mariners on Saturday.
Impact Patino, who had mostly worked out of the bullpen in 2020, was forced into a spot start when Mike Clevinger (biceps) was scratched. Patino threw 28 of his 50 pitches for strikes, but he wasn't very effecient. The 20-year-old now has a 5.51 ERA, 1.90 WHIP and 19 strikeouts in 16.1 innings across 10 appearances.
SEPTEMBER 20, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Sent down Monday Patino was optioned to the Padres' alternate training site Monday.
Impact Patino has been inconsistent while pitching mainly in low-leverage situations for the Padres this season, and he'll attempt to work things out at alternate camp. In his first major-league action this year, the right-hander posted a 5.52 ERA and 1.77 WHIP over 14.2 innings.
SEPTEMBER 7, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Expected to piggyback Morejon The Padres are expected to deploy Patino in Tuesday's game against the Rangers as a piggyback option behind starter Adrian Morejon, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
Impact As a 21-year-old with limited big-league experience, Morejon likely won't be asked to work more than 4-to-5 innings in what will be his 2020 debut. As a result, a piggyback arrangement between Morejon and another prized young arm in Patino may make some sense as the Padres look to keep both pitchers' workloads in check while simultaneously amplifying their performances. Patino was tagged for five runs over his first two relief appearances, but he was sharper his last time out against a tough Dodgers lineup Aug. 13, striking out two over two scoreless frames.
AUGUST 18, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Wild in relief Patino worked 1.2 innings out of the bullpen in Sunday's 9-5 win over the Diamondbacks, giving up two runs on two hits and four walks while striking out three.
Impact Patino was viewed as a potential candidate to replace the struggling Joey Lucchesi in the Padres' rotation this week, but his usage out of the bullpen Sunday officially took him out of the mix. Should another rotation spot open up at any point, the young right-hander may not be the next man up for a starting assignment after two rough showings out of the bullpen to begin his big-league career. He was previously tagged for three runs on three hits over two innings in his MLB debut Aug. 5 versus the Dodgers.
AUGUST 10, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
In consideration for starting role Patino is a candidate to start against the Dodgers on Monday or Tuesday, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
Impact The Padres have an open spot in their rotation with Joey Lucchesi moved to the team's alternate training site Thursday, so they will choose from a number of options to fill the role. Cal Quantrill appears to be the leading candidate for the job, but Patino is in the running, according to Padres manager Jayce Tingler. Patino pitched two innings against the Dodgers in his MLB debut Wednesday, allowing three runs on three hits while striking out two.
AUGUST 8, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Roughed up in big-league debut Patino tossed two innings in relief against the Dodgers on Wednesday, allowing three runs on three hits while striking out two.
Impact Patino retired reigning NL MVP Cody Bellinger to begin his major-league career; however, the following two batters singled and Joc Pederson followed with a three-run home run to extend the Dodgers' lead. Patino bounced back by retiring the final five batters he faced, but the damage was enough to spoil the prospect's debut.
