INJURIES

Working as starter in minors Patino will continue to work as a starter at Triple-A Durham according to manager Kevin Cash, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports.
Impact Patino will continue to stay stretched out in Durham, indicating that he could be next in line for a major-league start should the Rays come across an issue in their rotation. Patino posted a 3.60 ERA with 19 strikeouts across 15 major-league innings before suffering a finger injury May 19 and eventually being sent down May 30.

Reinstated, sent down Patino (finger) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list and optioned to Triple-A Durham on Sunday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact Patino had been throwing recently, and he's now ready to return to game action. The right-hander had worked as a starter before he was placed on the injured list, but he'll now head to the minors rather than taking on a bullpen role. Patino could be one of the top options to return to the majors if the Rays' rotation deals with injuries.

Completes side session Rays manager Kevin Cash said Patino (finger) threw a light side session Wednesday, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports.
Impact Tampa Bay will re-evaluate Patino on Thursday, and if the finger laceration on his throwing hand is no longer proving bothersome, he should return from the injured list for this weekend's two-game series versus the Phillies. The 21-year-old had been working as a starter prior to landing on the IL, but Tampa Bay could choose to reintegrate him in a bullpen role.

On IL with finger laceration The Rays placed Patino on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with a right middle finger laceration, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact Patino likely picked up the injury during his start in the Rays' 13-6 win Tuesday, when he was pulled after being roughed up for four earned runs on six hits and two walks over 3.1 innings. The Rays had been including Patino in a pseudo six-man rotation of late, so the team could just get by with the traditional five starters while the right-hander is on the mend.

Fails to pick up win Patino allowed four runs on six hits and two walks across 3.1 innings during Tuesday's 13-6 win at Baltimore. He recorded six strikeouts and didn't factor in the decision.
Impact The right-hander was in prime position to secure his second win of the season after the Rays provided an 8-0 cushion, but the 21-year-old needed 82 pitches for 10 outs and was unable to finish the fourth frame. Patino has a 3.60 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 19:4 K:BB over 15.1 innings this season.

Getting another start Tuesday Patino is scheduled to start Tuesday's game against the Orioles, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports.
Impact Earlier this month, manager Kevin Cash told Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times that the Rays would take a "floating sequencing" approach to the rotation, meaning that the team would take a flexible approach to determining its starters in a given week beyond Tyler Glasnow and Shane McClanahan. Ryan Yarbrough also seems to have a regular rotation spot locked down as a starter or primary pitcher out of the bullpen, leaving Patino, Josh Fleming and Rich Hill as candidates to eat innings on days when none of the aforementioned three are on the pitching schedule. At this point, Patino is expected to use as a traditional starter rather than as an opener when he's listed as the Rays' probable pitcher. He covered a season-high four innings in his last outing May 11 against the Yankees, giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits and a walk while striking out three.

Margot, Adames, Lowe lead Rays over Mets 7-1 for sweep

Manuel Margot, Willy Adames and Brandon Lowe homered off Marcus Stroman, leading the Tampa Bay Rays over the New York Mets 7-1for a three-game sweep
MAY 16, 2021 • Associated Press
Handed loss Tuesday Patino (1-1) allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits and a walk while striking out three as he took the loss against the Yankees on Tuesday,
Impact Patino found himself in a quick hole after serving up a solo home run to Aaron Judge in the first inning. He later allowed two men on in the third and one ended up scoring after two passed balls allowed the runners to advance. It's unclear how manager Kevin Cash plans to use the 21-year-old moving forward after he's made two relief appearances and two starts in his first four appearances this season. Patino had piggybacked Shane McClanahan in his last two outings but served as an opener Tuesday. If Cash plans to use him as an opener again then he'll be lined up for a meeting against the Mets over the weekend.

Opening Tuesday Patino will start and is expected to cover a few innings as an opener Tuesday against the Yankees, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact It appeared the 21-year-old would receive a look as a traditional starter Tuesday, but he'll instead be followed by Josh Fleming as the primary pitcher. Patino has maxed out at three innings and 56 pitches during his last outing May 4 and could have a similar workload versus New York.

Montgomery, Yankees to face Patino, Rays

The Yankees will start Jordan Montgomery on Tuesday and the Rays are expected to counter with Luis Patino
MAY 11, 2021 • Associated Press
Expected to start Tuesday The Rays list Patino as their probable starter for Tuesday's game against the Yankees.
Impact In his most recent two outings, Patino has piggybacked rookie Shane McClanahan, but the Rays elected to turn the latter loose as a traditional starter Sunday against the Athletics. Patino went unused out of the bullpen for that contest, as the Rays apparently intended to save him for Tuesday's series opener, when he'll be picking up his second start of the season. Ryan Yarbrough was initially lined up for Tuesday, so it's unclear whether he'll work as a primary pitcher behind Patino, or if the Rays will use a melange of bullpen arms to follow the young right-hander. Patino maxed out at three innings and 56 pitches in his last outing May 4, so fantasy managers shouldn't expect him to work more than four or five frames Tuesday.

Pair of scoreless frames in loss Patino fired two scoreless innings during a loss to the Athletics on Thursday, allowing one hit while recording two strikeouts.
Impact The promising right-hander has gotten his Rays tenure off to a nearly unblemished start, with Patino allowing just a hit and a walk over 4.2 innings across two appearances, the first coming as an opener against the Blue Jays on Sunday. The 21-year-old could continue to be used interchangeably as an opener, conventional reliever or even a bulk reliever, considering his extensive starting experience in the minors.
