Castillo set to start for Reds on opening day vs Cardinals

Luis Castillo has been picked to start on opening day for the Cincinnati Reds
MARCH 20, 2021 • Associated Press
Named Opening Day starter Castillo will start Opening Day against the Cardinals on April 1, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports.
Impact Castillo had a brief delay this spring due to visa issues, but he's had plenty of time to build up during Cactus League games. Manager David Bell confirmed Friday that Castillo will take the mound for the Reds during the first game of the season after posting a 3.21 ERA and 1.23 WHIP over 70 innings during 12 starts last season.

First live batting practice Castillo faced live hitting in batting practice for the first time this spring Monday, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.
Impact Castillo reported to camp late due to visa issues coming from the Dominican Republic. Castillo is expected to get his first spring training game action of the season Friday.

No trade imminent Reds GM Nick Krall issued a statement suggesting that rumors of Castillo being traded to the Yankees are 'completely false,' Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. "[The rumors] are comp...
Impact While Krall has asserted that he'll listen to offers for nearly everyone, it doesn't really make sense to trade Castillo, absent an overwhelming package. He's making only $4.2 million with the Reds in 2021 and won't become a free agent for another three seasons.
JANUARY 18, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Reaches deal with Reds Castillo signed a one-year, $4.2 million contract with the Reds on Friday to avoid arbitration, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.
Impact The right-hander is in his first year of arbitration eligibility, so the $4.2 million is a significant figure despite him still being underpaid. Castillo had a 3.21 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 89:24 K:BB over 70 innings last season, and he should sit at the top of Cincinnati's rotation in 2021 alongside Sonny Gray.

Outdueled in elimination game Castillo struck out seven batters over 5.1 innings in Game 2 of the NL Wild Card Series on Thursday, allowing just one run on six hits and a walk, but he picked up the loss thanks...
Impact The Reds got some strong pitching performances during their very brief time in the playoffs, but they failed to score a single run in 22 innings across their two losses. Castillo looked quite good in his first career postseason outing, allowing only an RBI double to Ronald Acuna in the fifth inning, but one run proved to be more than his teammates could manage. Still, the strong postseason debut caps off a good campaign for the 27-year-old righty, who cruised to a 3.21 ERA and a career-best 2.65 FIP in his 12 starts this season.

Takes loss in Minnesota Castillo (4-6) allowed four runs on six hits over four innings in a loss to the Twins on Saturday. He struck out four and did not issue a walk.
Impact Castillo had a bit of a letdown performance after the Reds clinched a postseason berth Friday night. He allowed four extra-base hits (all doubles), the most he's allowed in a start this season, but Castillo was smiling throughout and seemed just fine, albeit not completely dialed in. The win-loss record does not do Castillo's 2020 regular season justice -- he was one of the best pitchers in the National League by any other measure. The right-hander lines up to start Game 2 for Cincinnati in the wild-card round.

LeMahieu, Voit near milestones for Yankees in win over Miami

SEPTEMBER 27, 2020 • Associated Press
Fans nine, improves to 4-5 Castillo (4-5) picked up the win Monday against the Brewers, allowing one run on four hits and three walks across 6.2 innings. He struck out nine.
Impact Castillo was sharp once again Monday, with his lone hiccup being a solo shot by Jedd Gyorko in the fifth. The right-hander has won each of his last four starts, punching out 33 while allowing just four runs across 28.2 frames. After starting the campaign 0-5, Castillo will have a chance to even his record when he takes the ball Saturday in Minnesota.

Fans 10 in win Castillo (3-5) allowed three hits and one walk over seven scoreless innings in a win over the Pirates on Wednesday. He struck out 10.
Impact The right-hander put the team on his back once again after going the distance his last time out. He induced 18 swinging strikes on 91 pitches en route to his second double-digit strikeout performance of the season, and now has a 1.23 ERA and 24:6 K:BB in his last three starts. Castillo endured some tough luck early and did not get much support from his teammates, but the surface numbers are finally starting to match up to his underlying dominance. He lines up to start Tuesday at home against the Brewers and could potentially go again the final day of the regular season, Sept. 27 at Minnesota, if the Reds are still in it.

Dodgers beat Padres, become 1st to clinch postseason berth

SEPTEMBER 17, 2020 • Associated Press
Goes distance Friday Castillo (2-5) pitched a nine-inning complete game, allowing a run on two hits and three walks while striking out six in Friday's win over the Cardinals.
Impact Castillo emptied the tank in this game, throwing 112 pitches (73 strikes) while allowing just one extra-base hit. The only run he allowed happened in the second inning when Matt Carpenter's groundout allowed Brad Miller to score. Castillo's put together good outings in each of his last two starts. He now has a 3.44 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 66:20 K:BB across 52.1 innings this season. The right-hander is expected to face the Pirates on Wednesday in his next start.
SEPTEMBER 12, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Earns first win of 2020 Castillo (1-5) allowed two runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out eight over six innings as he earned the win in Game 1 of Friday's doubleheader against the Pirates.
Impact Castillo has been dominant at forcing strikeouts this season, but he's struggled to limit run production. As a result, he was charged with losses in five of his last six starts. However, he took advantage of the struggling Pirates in Friday's matinee to enter the win column for the first time this season. The right-hander now carries a 3.95 ERA and 60:17 K:BB over 43.1 innings in 2020. His next start should come on the road Thursday against the Cubs.
