Astros and Blue Jays square off with series tied 1-1
Both the Houston Astros and the Toronto Blue Jays are looking for a series win with a victory on Wednesday

Set to start Wednesday
Berrios (knee) is listed as Toronto's probable starter for Wednesday's game at Houston, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Impact
The right-hander exited Friday's start against the Rays after being struck in the knee by an 111.8-mph comebacker, but it appears he's been cleared to make his next turn through the rotation. The injury was tough luck for Berrios, who allowed just one run across five innings Friday after he posted an 11.17 ERA in his first two starts of the season.

Expected to make next start
Berrios was limited to 77 pitches Friday against the Rays after taking an 111.8 mph Yandy Diaz comebacker off the inside of his left knee, but he is expected to make his next start...
Impact
Despite the early exit, this was still easily Berrios' best start of the year, as he gave up one earned run on four hits and zero walks while striking out six in five innings en route to his first win of the season. There's always a chance the knee feels worse in the coming days, but it's encouraging that manager John Schneider gave Berrios a vote of confidence right after the game. Assuming he stays on turn, Berrios would face the Astros in Houston next week.

Endures another poor outing
Berrios (0-2) took the loss against the Angels on Saturday, allowing six runs (four earned) on six hits and one walk while striking out five batters over four innings.
Impact
Berrios cruised through two scoreless innings and was handed a four-run lead heading into the bottom of the third, but that's when things began to fall apart for him. The right-hander gave up three runs between the third and fourth frames and allowed the first three batters he faced to reach base in the fifth -- one on his own error. When Mike Trout slammed a three-run homer off reliever Adam Cimber one batter after his departure, Berrios became responsible for the loss. It's been a tough start to the season for Berrios, as he's allowed 12 earned runs through his first 9.2 innings.

Nickel-and-dimed by Royals
Berrios (0-1) gave up eight earned runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out seven in 5.2 innings Monday against the Royals. He took the loss.
Impact
He was BABIP'd (.500) to death in this one, and generally seven strikeouts and two walks while going five-plus frames in the first start of the year would be a strong outing, but that obviously wasn't the case here. Coming off a puzzling 2022 campaign where he put up uncharacteristically high ratios (5.23 ERA, 1.42 WHIP), Berrios did little to earn the trust of his fantasy managers, although at least the strikeouts were there. The second of his two starts this week is tentatively scheduled for Saturday in Anaheim.

Rough outing in WBC
Berrios took the loss in Sunday's WBC game against Venezuela, coughing up six runs (five earned) on five hits and two walks over just one inning. He struck out one.
Impact
The start was reminiscent of Berrios' struggles in 2022 for the Blue Jays as the right-hander missed his spots in the strike zone and got hit hard, with Anthony Santander's three-run homer being the biggest blow. Per Gregor Chisholm of The Toronto Star, Berrios has been working on some mechanical tweaks to improve his command, but it doesn't look like those efforts have paid off just yet. The 28-year-old had a 3.52 ERA and 26.1 percent strikeout rate in 2021 and his raw stuff isn't in question, but those numbers collapsed to 5.23 and 19.8 percent last year. Whether he can regain his prior form could be one of the keys to Toronto's fortunes this season, as well as those of fantasy GMs gambling on a rebound.

Solid spring debut
Berrios gave up two hits and a walk over two scoreless innings while striking out two in Tuesday's split-squad game against the Phillies.
Impact
The 28-year-old right-hander is coming off the worst full season of his career, posting a 5.23 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 19.8 percent strikeout rate over 172 innings, so a good spring would go a long toward reassuring fantasy GMs considering whether to gamble on a rebound. Berrios is still locked into a rotation spot for the Blue Jays, but if his 2023 begins the way his 2022 ended, his leash could be fairly short.

Ends season in win column
Berrios (12-7) picked up the win in Monday's 5-1 victory over the Orioles, allowing one run on three hits and three walks over six innings. He struck out five.
Impact
The right-hander wasn't exactly sharp, tossing 58 of 91 pitches for strikes, but Berrios did what he needed to do to end the regular season with a win. The quality start was his 17th of the year, and he'll take a bit of momentum into the playoffs after an erratic campaign that left him with a 5.23 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 149:45 K:BB through 172 innings.

Fans seven in seventh loss
Berrios (11-7) took the loss Tuesday, coughing up five runs on nine hits and two walks over 5.1 innings as the Blue Jays were downed 5-2 by the Yankees. He struck out seven.
Impact
The seven Ks were his highest total since he fanned nine Yankees on Aug. 18, but that was the only silver lining to Berrios' performance. The right-hander had a run of three straight quality starts to begin September but has stumbled since, giving up 11 runs in his last two outings. His 5.37 ERA and 1.43 WHIP through 166 innings on the year remain very disappointing, considering he hadn't posted an ERA above 4.00 for a season since his 58.1-inning big-league debut in 2016.

Lasts just two innings
Berrios (11-6) took the loss Thursday, allowing six runs on seven hits and one walk over two innings against Tampa Bay. He struck out one.
Impact
Berrios surrendered a leadoff home run to Jonathan Aranda on just the second pitch he threw and it was mostly downhill from there. The right-hander would go on to allow two more runs in the inning and another three runs in the second inning before being replaced in the third. It was Berrios' shortest outing since his season opener April 8 in which he lasted just one-third of an inning, and it snapped a streak of three consecutive quality starts. He lines up to face the Yankees at home in his next start.

Quality start and win
Berrios (11-5) earned the win Saturday, allowing two runs on seven hits and two walks over six innings against the Orioles. He struck out three.
Impact
Berrios surrendered a two-run single to Gunnar Henderson to cut the Orioles' deficit to one in the third inning. The righty's last nine starts have been inconsistent as he has allowed four runs or more in three of them and two earned runs or fewer in the other six. In addition, the 28-year-old has thrown six innings or more in six of those games and four innings or fewer in two.

Nine punchouts in win
Berrios (9-5) earned the victory Thursday against the Yankees, striking out nine in 6.2 innings while allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits, a walk and a hit batsman.
Impact
Outside of the first three batters of the third inning, Berrios was excellent. In the third, he allowed a walk and hit a batter before a run-scoring single and an RBI groundout led to both of New York's runs. He scattered four hits over the rest of the outing and kept the Yankees off the board. It was his first good outing in August as he allowed 13 runs and four homers in 7.2 innings over his previous two starts. His next start will likely be in the middle of next week in Boston.
