Stuck with loss in quality start Springs (2-2) took the loss Friday as the Rays fell 2-0 to the Yankees, giving up two runs on five hits over six innings. He struck out six without walking a batter.

Impact It was a strong performance from the southpaw, who tossed 80 pitches (56 strikes) in his first quality start of the season. However, Springs served up a pair of solo homers in the fourth inning and had no margin for error. Since moving into the rotation in May, he has a 2.21 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and 19:4 K:BB in 20.1 innings over four outings.

Impact Springs tossed a season-high 5.2 frames in the victory, and he completed his second straight scoreless outing despite walking more batters in the contest (four) than he had across his first 11 appearances combined. The southpaw's seven strikeouts were also his most of the campaign thus far, and he got there on the strength of 16 swinging strikes. Springs appears to be building up his pitch count now that he is part of the rotation -- Saturday was the first time he has reached 80 pitches this season. In his most recent relief appearance Tuesday against the Athletics, Springs built up to 31 pitches over 3.1 scoreless innings.
