INJURIES

Becomes free agent The Diamondbacks released Keuchel on Friday.
Impact As anticipated, Keuchel wasn't claimed off waivers after Arizona designated him for assignment Wednesday. Since Keuchel wasn't going to be receptive to a minor-league assignment, Arizona elected to cut ties with the veteran southpaw entirely, allowing him to explore his options elsewhere. The 2015 American League Cy Young Award winner may be running out of chances in the big leagues, given that he's pitched to a 6.05 ERA and 1.65 WHIP in 212.2 innings over 42 starts between the White Sox and Diamondbacks over the past two seasons.

Designated for assignment Keuchel was designated for assignment by the Diamondbacks on Wednesday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
Impact Keuchel caught on with the Diamondbacks after he was DFA'd by the White Sox earlier this year, but he will once again find himself a free agent after he likely clears waivers following his removal from the 40-man roster Wednesday. The left-hander owns a 8.53 ERA and 2,03 WHIP with 38 strikeouts over 50.2 innings in 12 starts with the White Sox and Diamondbacks this season.

Lit up in loss Keuchel (2-7) allowed eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits and a walk with four strikeouts in 4.1 innings, taking the loss Tuesday versus the Giants.
Impact The Giants set the tone early and teed off for three home runs against Keuchel. The lefty has alternated between mediocre and awful in his first four games for the Diamondbacks, and he's doing little to prove himself worthy of a spot in the rotation. Through 50.2 innings between the Diamondbacks and the White Sox, he has an 8.53 ERA, 2.03 WHIP and 38:27 K:BB. Arizona's off day Thursday likely means Keuchel won't pitch again until after the All-Star break.

Bounces back with quality start Keuchel tossed seven innings against Colorado on Thursday, allowing three runs on seven hits and no walks while striking out four batters. He didn't factor in the decision.
Impact Keuchel's rotation spot may have been in jeopardy after he allowed 10 earned runs over 9.1 innings in his first two starts with Arizona, but the veteran bounced back with a strong effort Thursday. He tossed a campaign-high seven innings and didn't issue any free passes for the first time since his first start of the season (as a member of the White Sox) April 13. Keuchel had walked exactly three batters in four of his previous five outings, so his improved control Thursday was particularly notable. He still holds an ugly 7.63 ERA overall this season, but Keuchel at least demonstrated that there's some juice left in the tank with his second quality start of the campaign.

Lovullo noncommittal on next start Arizona manager Torey Lovullo was noncommittal as to whether Keuchel will get another start, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.
Impact Keuchel was roughed up by the Rockies on Saturday, but his final line may have looked better had a couple of plays been made behind him, one of which was not ruled an error. It's likely the left-hander remains in the rotation for at least one more start, as the Diamondbacks are down one starter after Zach Davies (shoulder) was added to the 15-day injured list.
JULY 3, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Struggles in Colorado Keuchel (2-6) allowed seven runs (six earned) on six hits and three walks with three strikeouts over five innings, taking the loss Saturday versus the Rockies.
Impact Keuchel didn't do that well in his first start for Arizona on June 26, and pitching at Coors Field was a tough ask for him in his encore. He got off to a rough beginning, yielding four runs, including a three-run home to Brendan Rodgers, in the first inning. Keuchel got into trouble again in the fourth, allowing a bases-clearing triple to Connor Joe. In 10 starts this year, Keuchel sports an 8.27 ERA, 2.10 WHIP and 30:26 K:BB across 41.1 innings between the Diamondbacks and the White Sox. The southpaw's spot in the rotation is far from secure, but he lines up for a home rematch with the Rockies next week if he gets another turn.

Will get another start Arizona manager Torey Lovullo confirmed Tuesday that Keuchel will get another start, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
Impact This news may have been expected, but Lovullo's comments suggest Keuchel is still in an audition phase. The left-hander made his Diamondbacks' debut last Sunday, giving up four runs in 4.1 innings. The 15 swinging strikes induced were more than he registered in any of his eight starts while with the White Sox. Keuchel will likely remain in the rotation going forward, particularly after Arizona placed starter Zach Davies on the injured list with shoulder inflammation. He's expected to start Sunday in Colorado but could be moved up to take Davies' spot Saturday.

Strikes out seven in Arizona debut Keuchel allowed four runs on six hits and three walks and struck out seven over 4.1 innings versus the Tigers on Sunday. He did not factor in the decision.
Impact Keuchel showed some promise with the season-high total in strikeouts, but it was still an inefficient performance. He threw 98 pitches (55 strikes) to get 13 outs in his first outing with the Diamondbacks. For the season, he has a 2-5 record, a 7.93 ERA, 2.15 WHIP and 27:23 K:BB through 36.1 innings, which includes his first eight starts this year with the White Sox. If Keuchel remains in the majors, he's projected for a tough road start in Colorado next weekend.

Keuchel called up by Diamondbacks to start vs Tigers

Former Cy Young Award winner Dallas Keuchel has been called up by the Arizona Diamondbacks from the minors to start against the Detroit Tigers
JUNE 26, 2022 • Associated Press
Contract selected for Sunday start Keuchel had his contract selected by the Diamondbacks and is starting Sunday's game versus the Tigers.
Impact Keuchel was let go by the White Sox in late May but quickly latched on with the Diamondbacks on a minor-league deal, and he'll join the big-league club after making two starts in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League. The veteran left-hander posted a 7.88 ERA and 20:20 K:BB in 32 innings over his eight starts with Chicago to begin the year, but Arizona will hope the change of scenery can bring some different results.
JUNE 26, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Starting Sunday Manager Torey Lovullo confirmed that Keuchel will be called up from the minors to start Sunday's game against the Tigers, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports.
Impact The club needs to make room on the 40-man roster before calling up the veteran left-hander. Keuchel was designated for assignment by the White Sox on May 28 and was picked up by Arizona later that week. He made two starts with the Diamondbacks' rookie-level Arizona Complex League affiliate, tossing 12 innings and striking out 17 between the two outings while conceding seven runs (six earned) on 12 hits and two walks.

Impact Arizona manager Torey Lovullo described the outing as "extremely good," while pitching coach Brent Strom marveled at the swings and misses on pitches in the zone. Beyond the veteran lefty making rookies look foolish, there are other signs that point to Keuchel joining the team's five-man rotation as soon as Saturday. Another potential candidate, Luke Weaver, who was roughed up in a start Saturday, did not throw a bullpen session Tuesday. That would have been the day to throw on a normal starter's routine. Instead, Lovullo confirmed Weaver will be available as a reliever in the coming days. The manager added the team is "targeting someone this weekend" to start against the Tigers without naming Keuchel. Adding to the speculation, Keuchel's minor-league deal includes three opt-out dates if he's not promoted -- the first opt-out date is Saturday.
JUNE 22, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Pitches in ACL Keuchel allowed four runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out four for the Diamondbacks' affiliate in the Arizona Complex League on Monday.
Impact This was Keuchel's first game action with the organization after signing a minor-league contract last week. He threw about 80 pitches and did "fairly well," Arizona pitching coach Brent Strom told Theo Mackie of the Arizona Republic. The coach was pleased with the number of strikes thrown and the lefty's signature sinker; the downside was the fastball was not where Strom wanted to see it. Strom and Keuchel have history when the two were with the Astros, and the coach will monitor the pitcher's off-day throwing session Thursday.

Arizona D-Backs coach Brent Strom gets back to work with Dallas Keuchel Arizona Diamondbacks pitching coach Brent Strom wants to see some mechanical changes from left-hander Dallas Keuchel.
JUNE 12, 2022 • AZCENTRAL.COM
Not in mix for Sunday Keuchel is not being considered for a start Sunday in Philadelphia, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
Impact Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo confirmed that Keuchel is not a candidate for that spot, adding that the left-hander was on the taxi squad in the event of issues with COVID-19. Keuchel recently signed a minor-league deal with Arizona, which gave him a chance to work again with his former pitching coach Brent Strom. The two were together in Houston.
