Inks minor-league deal with Royals The Royals signed Keuchel to a minor-league contract Wednesday.

Impact Per Jeff Passan of ESPN.com, Keuchel held a workout for teams last week and touched 92 mph. He will be assigned to Triple-A Omaha and would make a prorated $2 million if called up by Kansas City. The 37-year-old Keuchel posted a 5.40 ERA in four starts for the Brewers last season before finishing the year in Japan with the Chiba Lotte Marines.

Pitching with Japanese team Keuchel signed a contract with the Lotte Marines of Nippon Professional baseball on July 30, The Mainichi reports.

Impact Keuchel has made two starts already for the Marines, most recently tossing seven shutout innings in his last outing. The veteran left-hander reached the majors with the Brewers earlier this season, posting a 5.40 ERA and 11:8 K:BB over 16.2 frames in four starts. Keuchel is now 36 and is unlikely to be an impact player in the majors again, but he's not ready to call it a career just yet.

Impact Keuchel's run with Milwaukee ends after just four starts, over which he compiled a 5.40 ERA, 1.86 WHIP and 11:8 K:BB in 16.2 innings. The 36-year-old southpaw will most likely clear waivers, though it's unclear if he'll be willing to report to the Brewers' Triple-A affiliate in Nashville thereafter, as he could prefer to elect free agency and explore his options on the open market. The Brewers won't need another No. 5 starter to replace Keuchel until July 24, at which time Joe Ross (back) might be ready to return from the 60-day injured list.

Impact Shortly after Keuchel was acquired from the Mariners on Tuesday, Brewers manager Pat Murphy indicated that the veteran southpaw wasn't viewed merely as organizational depth at the Triple-A level. Keuchel will thus be put to work right away with the big club, slotting in as the team's new No. 5 starter after Carlos F. Rodriguez was optioned to Triple-A Nashville on Tuesday. The Brewers will make an official roster move prior to Wednesday's 2:10 p.m. ET to activate Keuchel, a two-time All-Star who has seen big-league action with five different teams since leaving the Astros following the 2018 season. Keuchel owns an ugly 6.29 ERA over 260.1 big-league innings dating back to the start of the 2021 campaign, but he had been pitching effectively in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League over 13 starts at Triple-A Tacoma this season (3.93 ERA, 1.21 WHIP in 71 innings) prior to joining the Brewers.
