Athletics' Zack Gelof to have MRI after injuring knee during collision with left field fence

Athletics outfielder Zack Gelof left the game in the third inning against the Detroit Tigers after injuring his right knee
JULY 10 • Associated Press
Fading back into platoon role Thomas is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Tigers.
Impact Thomas made six consecutive starts in the corner outfield from June 27 through last Friday, but he now finds himself on the bench for the third time in four games. All three of those absences have come against right-handed pitching, as Thomas looks like he'll have to settle for a short-side platoon role with Carlos Cortes having heated back up at the plate and earned himself more opportunities versus righties at Thomas' expense.
JULY 8 • ROTOWIRE
Goes yard again Thomas went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run in Tuesday's 9-3 loss to the Dodgers.
Impact Thomas continued his recent success at the plate with his seventh-inning blast. He has homered in consecutive contests and has gone 5-for-12 over his last four games while seeing some steady playing time while the Athletics are missing Tyler Soderstrom (hip) and Brent Rooker (knee) from the outfield mix. Thomas is batting .238 with a .687 OPS, four homers, 10 RBI, 10 runs scored, two doubles and a stolen base over 85 plate appearances this season.
JULY 1 • ROTOWIRE
Homers in Monday's loss Thomas went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in Monday's 9-4 loss to the Dodgers.
Impact Thomas picked up his first multi-hit effort since May 13 versus the Cardinals. He's largely filled a platoon role at best during his time in the majors this season, but injuries are piling up for the Athletics, which has opened the door for him to get more playing time recently. The outfielder is batting just .221 with a .623 OPS, three homers, eight RBI, nine runs scored and one stolen base over 82 plate appearances. Thomas will need to take advantage of his opportunities to maintain more playing time in the near future.
JUNE 30 • ROTOWIRE
Drawing third straight start Thomas will start in left field and bat fifth in Monday's game against the Dodgers.
Impact The right-handed-hitting Thomas will stick in the lineup for a third straight game while the Athletics face another lefty starter (Eric Lauer), but the 25-year-old could begin to get more looks versus right-handed pitching, too. The Athletics deactivated Tyler Soderstrom (hip) and Jacob Wilson (thumb) on Monday, with the two joining Brent Rooker (knee) and Zack Gelof (hand) on a growing injured list. Thomas could end up serving as the primary replacement in left field for Soderstrom, though the Athletics might prefer to give Carlos Cortes another look in a strong-side platoon run.
JUNE 30 • ROTOWIRE
Posts steal in loss Thomas went 1-for-3 with one RBI and a stolen base in Saturday's 5-2 loss to the Angels.
Impact Thomas' steal was his first of the campaign. The outfielder has largely filled a depth role this season. Prior to Saturday, he went 0-for-16 with seven strikeouts across his previous nine games, so he hasn't done much at all to make a case for more playing time. He's batting .211 with a .577 OPS, two home runs, seven RBI, eight runs scored and two doubles over 76 plate appearances.

Knocks RBI double in Tuesday's win Thomas went 1-for-3 with a double, two RBI and a run scored in Tuesday's 14-6 victory over the Angels.
Impact Thomas got in on the Athletics' offensive onslaught early, connecting on an opposite-field double to plate two runs in the third inning as the club went on to tally a season high in runs scored. The outfielder has seen sporadic playing time, almost exclusively against left-handed pitching, but has fared well when called upon in 2026. He's slashing .344/.382/.500 with a homer, two doubles, five RBI and four runs across 35 plate appearances.

Deposits first homer Sunday Thomas went 1-for-2 with a solo home run in Sunday's win over the Guardians.
Impact Before being pinch-hit for by Lawrence Butler in the sixth inning, Thomas opened the scoring with a scorching solo homer in the second inning. It marked the first extra-base hit of the season for the 25-year-old, who opened the year with Triple-A Las Vegas before being recalled April 22. The outfielder has seen limited playing time with the big-league club, primarily getting looks against lefties, and has gone 4-for-15 (.267) with two RBI, one run scored and two walks across six appearances.

Recalled from Triple-A The Athletics recalled Thomas from Triple-A Las Vegas on Wednesday.
Impact Thomas has slashed .309/.397/.574 with five home runs over his first 17 contests with Las Vegas this season. The 25-year-old could see some reps in the outfield and/or at designated hitter while Denzel Clarke (foot) and Brent Rooker (oblique) are shelved.

Misses out on Opening Day roster The Athletics optioned Thomas to Triple-A Las Vegas on Sunday.
Impact With Lawrence Butler (knees) making his Cactus League debut this past week to clear up any concern about his readiness for Opening Day, the Athletics didn't have regular playing time in the outfield available for Thomas to begin the season. Rather than keeping Thomas around as a platoon bat, the Athletics will let the 25-year-old continue his development at Las Vegas, where he'll be able to play on an everyday basis. Thomas should rank near the top of the list for a call-up if the Athletics have an opening in the outfield or at designated hitter at any point.
MARCH 22 • ROTOWIRE
Drives second spring homer Thomas started in right field and went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and an additional run scored in Sunday's Cactus League loss to the Guardians.
Impact Thomas opened the scoring, blasting a solo homer off Tanner Bibee that left the bat at 110.2 mph. Through 15 Cactus League appearances, he's hitting .250/.270/.472 with two doubles, two homers and eight RBI. Coming off a rookie campaign in which he slashed .225/.267/.417 with five doubles, six homers and 19 RBI in 49 games, Thomas is battling for a spot on the Athletics' bench as a reserve outfielder alongside Carlos Cortes.
MARCH 16 • ROTOWIRE
Ready to play outfield Thomas (elbow) is starting in left field and batting fifth in Thursday's Cactus League game against the Rangers.
Impact The 25-year-old has been dealing with elbow inflammation, so he's been limited to serving as a designated hitter in spring games the past couple weeks. Thomas is now fully healthy and cleared to play the outfield. He's yet to get on track at the plate this spring and has a .431 OPS through 11 Cactus League games.
MARCH 12 • ROTOWIRE
Managing elbow issue Thomas is dealing with inflammation in his right elbow and will start up a throwing program Monday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
Impact Thomas is still expected to see some Cactus League action as a designated hitter, but he'll need to build up his arm a bit before being cleared to play the outfield. The 25-year-old is competing for a bench spot on the Opening Day roster after posting a .684 OPS in 49 games as a rookie last year.
