Cubs open 3-game series at home against the Reds

The Chicago Cubs start a three-game series at home against the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday
3 DAYS AGO • ASSOCIATED PRESS
Allan Cerda - Heads to Double-A The Reds promoted Cerda from High-A Dayton to Double-A Chattanooga on Monday, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Impact Cerda was protected from the Rule 5 draft and added to the Reds' 40-man roster over the winter, and the 23-year-old outfielder's performance so far this season has seemingly validated that decision. Over 249 plate appearances at Dayton, Cerda got on base at a .357 clip while producing 26 extra-base hits (13 home runs, 12 doubles and one triple).

Justin Dunn - Covers two frames in rehab start Dunn (shoulder) struck out one over two innings Sunday in his first rehab start for High-A Dayton. He gave up an earned run on three hits and one walk.
Impact The two-inning appearance was Dunn's first at any level in 2022 after he was placed on the 60-day injured list coming out of spring training with a right shoulder strain. Though the Reds don't have a spot available for him in the big-league rotation at present, Dunn is expected to be built up for a starting role during his 30-day rehab window. He'll likely make at least two or three more starts in the minors before being activated.

C. Notes: A little time off to digest works wonders for Nick Senzel Do the Reds actually have a closer? It seems that way, even though manager David Bell has traditionally avoided defining the role.

Brandon Drury - Hits first triple Drury went 2-for-5 with an RBI triple and a run scored in a 10-3 win over the Giants on Sunday.
Impact Drury opened the offensive floodgates in the third inning with a triple off Anthony DeSclafani, his first of the season. The 29-year-old third baseman has a six-game hitting streak going and is on pace for a career year. According to Fangraphs, Drury has already accumulated a 1.8 WAR this year to tie his career-best season-long total from 2018. Drury's offensive production has been a pleasant surprise for a player with numerous seasons below replacement-level value.

Nick Senzel - Perfect day at the plate Senzel went 3-for-3 with an RBI, a run scored and a walk in a 10-3 win over the Giants on Sunday.
Impact The No. 8 hitter enabled the Reds' offensive barrage from the bottom of the order by not making an out the entire game. The 26-year-old center fielder has now hit safely in four straight games and is hitting .236 on the season with one home run and 12 RBI.
4 DAYS AGO • ROTOWIRE
Joey Votto - Hits two doubles Votto went 2-for-5 with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored in a 10-3 win over the Giants on Sunday.
Impact Votto had come into the game riding a cold stretch, slashing a weak .190/.261/.214 over the past 15 days. The two-double day at the plate gives him 13 doubles on the campaign and lifts his season average to .213. Votto got off to a terrible start this year and is hoping to right the ship in the time that remains. He has never hit below .261 in a full season's worth of at-bats.

Tyler Mahle - Strikes out seven in quality start Mahle (3-6) gave up three earned runs on four hits and a walk while striking out seven over 6.2 innings to earn the win in a 10-3 victory over the Giants on Sunday.
Impact Mahle took advantage of 10 runs of offensive support to notch his third win of the season on the back of 6.2 effective innings. The 27-year-old right-hander now has five quality starts in his last six appearances, with the one weak performance during that stretch coming against the Dodgers. Mahle has shown the ability to generate swinging strikes on his 94 mph fastball over the course of his career, and he is averaging 10 strikeouts per nine innings this season. He will try to pick up win number four next week against Atlanta.

Alexis Díaz - Could be activated Friday Diaz (biceps) could be ready to return from the 15-day injured list Friday when first eligible to be activated, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Impact Diaz was scheduled to throw off a mound Sunday in San Francisco for the first time since landing on the IL on June 19. Assuming Diaz comes out of the side session feeling no worse for the wear, he'll throw again Wednesday in what could be his final test before he returns from the IL. Though Diaz was part of the Reds' muddled closing mix prior to landing on the shelf, he could have to settle for a setup role upon his return after manager David Bell suggested Sunday that Hunter Strickland could get a long look in the ninth-inning role.

Hunter Strickland - Looks like primary closer Manager David Bell intimated Sunday that Strickland is the Reds' preferred closing option, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. "Hunter is definitely somebody that...
Impact Alexis Diaz (biceps) and Tony Santillan (back) recently joined Lucas Sims (back) on the injured list, with their absences thrusting Strickland into a more prominent role out of necessity. Strickland, who claimed the Reds' most recent save chance in Friday's win over the Giants, looks like he could operate as the team's primary ninth-inning option, at least until the Reds add some healthy arms back into the mix. Of the three injured relievers, Diaz looks to be the closest to a return; he threw a bullpen session Sunday and could be activated from the IL on Friday when first eligible.
4 DAYS AGO • ROTOWIRE
Matt McLain - Hits shelf at Double-A Double-A Chattanooga placed McLain on its 7-day injured list Sunday due to an unspecified injury.
Impact The Reds haven't provided an explanation behind McLain's placement on the IL, but he hadn't played in either of Chattanooga's past two games after apparently getting hurt Thursday against Tennessee. For the season, the 22-year-old infielder is hitting .233 with 12 home runs and a 16-for-17 success rate on stolen-base attempts across 261 plate appearances at Double-A.
5 DAYS AGO • ROTOWIRE
Mike Moustakas - Heads to bench Sunday Moustakas is not in the lineup for Sunday's game at San Francisco, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports.
Impact Moustakas went 3-for-7 with two doubles, an RBI and three runs across the first two games of the series, but he'll take a seat Sunday despite the fact righty Anthony DeSclafani is pitching for the Giants. Max Schrock will bat leadoff as the designated hitter.
5 DAYS AGO • ROTOWIRE
Kyle Farmer - Not starting Sunday Farmer is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Giants, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports.
Impact Farmer started the past eight games and will receive Sunday off after slashing .276/.344/.345 during that stretch. Matt Reynolds will take over at shortstop and bat sixth.
5 DAYS AGO • ROTOWIRE
Jonathan India - Sitting out Sunday India (hand) is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Giants, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports.
Impact The 25-year-old exited Saturday's contest after being hit by a pitch on his right hand, though he appears to have avoided a serious injury as X-rays came back negative. India will now have two days to rest up before Tuesday's series opener against the Cubs since the Reds have a scheduled day off Monday. Donovan Solano will start at the keystone Sunday for Cincinnati.

Nick Senzel - Notches fifth steal Senzel went 1-for-3 with an RBI single and a stolen base in Saturday's 9-2 loss to the Giants.
Impact Senzel knocked in the opening run and stole a base in the second inning, but the Giants took over after that. After enduring a 2-for-18 skid, Senzel has gone 5-for-10 with a double, three RBI, three steals and two runs scored in his last three contests. The outfielder still has plenty to prove -- he's slashing .222/.275/.272 with one home run, 11 RBI, 19 runs scored, five steals and five doubles across 171 plate appearances this season, but he's finally trending in the right direction again.
