Nathaniel Lowe - Signs NRI pact with Cincinnati The Reds signed Lowe to a minor-league contract Friday that includes an invitation to spring training, Mark Feinsand and Mark Sheldon of MLB.com report.
Impact The 30-year-old Lowe had to settle for a minor-league deal after slashing a disappointing .228/.307/.381 with 18 home runs over 153 regular-season games between the Nationals and Red Sox. The Reds already have Sal Stewart and Eugenio Suarez projected for everyday at-bats between first base and designated hitter, so it's difficult to see a current fit for Lowe in the lineup. However, he will give the club some quality depth on a no-risk contract.

Spencer Steer - Addresses quad issue in offseason Steer said Thursday that he cleaned up his sprinting mechanics to prevent re-injuring a quadriceps, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.
Impact Steer got off to a slow start in 2025 because of a shoulder injury, but he admitted there was a right quadriceps issue that bothered him for most of the season. "I think that had to do with my sprinting mechanics, and I cleaned that stuff up," he said. That was likely the reason he stole just seven bases after reaching double-digit swipes in each of the previous two seasons. Steer, who earned a Gold Glove for his work at first base in 2025, will move around the diamond this season. His primary spot will be left field but depending on matchups, injuries and game situations, he could also see time in right field, and at first, second or third base.

Joel Valdez - Shut down with shoulder injury Reds manager Terry Francona said Thursday that Valdez will be shut down from throwing for a few weeks due to a shoulder issue, Charlie Goldsmith of Fox 19 Now Cincinnati reports.
Impact Valdez finished the 2025 season with a 2.34 ERA and 67:25 K:BB over 57.2 innings between Double-A Chattanooga and Triple-A Louisville. The 25-year-old was already a long shot to make the Opening Day roster, and the shoulder injury should essentially eliminate him from contention.

Impact Encarnacion-Strand is on a running program, so he is improving, but he could miss the first few Cactus League games. The 26-year-old infielder slashed just .208/.234/.377 across 137 plate appearances last season and looks to be a bit buried on the Reds' depth chart.

Impact TJ Friedl is expected to get the most starts in center field this season, but the Reds want to see how Marte handles the new position. Marte moved from third base to right field in 2025, and though there were growing pains, he eventually proved himself to be competent and enters 2026 as the primary starter in right.

Sal Stewart - Drops weight Stewart shed 26 pounds during the offseason, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.
Impact Stewart, primarily a third baseman in the minors, has a clear path to playing regularly at first base and designated hitter this season. He was introduced to the new position last season and had a throwing error in the playoffs that led to a four-run rally by the Dodgers. It's unclear if the error prompted him to drop the weight, but the early report out of camp is that the slimmer Stewart has improved his athleticism. How that reduction in weight impacts his offense is something to monitor, but Stewart is confident he will retain his compact swing and continue to hit for power. During his September call-up last year, he slashed .255/.293/.545 with five home runs, eight RBIs and 11 runs scored over 58 plate appearances.

Impact Williamson's ability to face hitters in the first week of spring training would seem to indicate that he's facing no restrictions to begin camp after he missed the entire 2025 season while recovering from September 2024 Tommy John surgery. The 27-year-old lefty will get the chance to compete for a spot in the Reds' Opening Day rotation this spring, but he still has two minor-league options remaining and seems more likely to begin the season as a starter at Triple-A Louisville.

Tyler Stephenson - Wins arbitration case Stephenson will earn $6.8 million in 2026 after winning his arbitration hearing against the Reds, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Impact The two sides went to a hearing despite just a $250,000 difference in their submitted arbitration figures, and the three-person panel ultimately picked Stephenson's filing. Stephenson put up a .737 OPS with 13 home runs over 88 regular-season contests for the Reds this past season and will be their top catcher again in 2026. He is slated to reach free agency next offseason.
