Army uniforms vs. Navy to honor World War II paratroopers

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Army's uniforms for their annual rivalry matchup against Navy will honor World War II paratroopers.

On Monday, Army tweeted photos of the uniforms, which feature regimental patches on the shoulder and an oversized American flag patch, among other details honoring the 82nd Airborne Division.

The "AA" patch is a tribute to the 82nd's "All-American" nickname, which they earned during the war because they drew members from each state. The airborne division led the invasions of Italy, Normandy and Holland, for which they were celebrated for their bravery and mental toughness.

The football helmets' painted design mimics the netting worn over the paratroopers own helmets.
