Callandret leads Idaho to 74-54 win over San Jose State

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) Perrion Callandret scored 18 with five assists, both career highs, to help Idaho beat San Jose State 74-54 in the season opener for both teams Saturday night.

Nate Sherwood hit 6 of 7 field goals, including both of his 3-point attempts, and finished with 15 points in his college debut, while Victor Sanders had 13 points and eight rebounds for Idaho. Ty Egbert had seven rebounds and five blocked shots.

San Jose State made just two field goals in the first 15-plus minutes and Idaho led 28-9 with 4:53 left the first half.

The Spartans used an 11-0 run to close the first and open the second that cut their deficit to 34-23, but the Vandals responded with a 12-2 spurt and San Jose State never threatened again.

Ryan Welage had 15 points with 10 rebounds and Gary Williams Jr. scored 13 for San Jose State.
