Auburn Basketball: Offense Produces Highest Output of Season in Win over Upstate

Auburn basketball scored the most points it has all regular season in a 90-83 win over USC Upstate on Tuesday night at Auburn Arena.

Other than the exhibition game where Auburn basketball scored 96 points against Montevallo, the 90 points scored in the win over USC Upstate Tuesday night are the most they’ve scored all year.

The offense was led by freshman Mustapha Heron who scored a game-high 23 points to go along with a team-high 6 rebounds and 3 assists.

LaRon Smith and Ronnie Johnson both came off the bench to score double figures with 15 and 10 respectively.

Jared Harper was the only other Tiger to scored double-digit points with 10.

Danjel Purifoy had a quiet night offensively, but he did dish out a game-high 9 assists.

Once again LaRon Smith outplayed Horace Spencer, and Bruce Pearl let it ride keeping him out there six more minutes than the starter Spencer who finished with 7 points and 4 rebounds.

Despite the 90 point output, it wasn’t a great shooting game for Auburn who was just 7-of-32 from three and shot 59 percent from the free throw line.

However, they were 28-of-45 from inside the arc, which is pretty solid.

The team did show some weaknesses in this game, specifically on the boards where they were out-rebounded 52-41. Twenty-seven of those rebounds came from two USC Upstate players in Malik Moore and Michael Buchanan.

The 7-foot tall Buchanan absolutely man-handled our bigs in this game finishing with 20 points and 15 rebounds.

Overall I thought the defense struggled in this game giving up 83 points and allowing USC Upstate to shoot 42 percent from the field and 30 percent from three.

Auburn has now played three games in a row where they’ve had to deal with some big guys down low, and I think that could be a problem for Auburn going forward.

Still, a win is a win, and now the Tigers get ready to travel to Birmingham on Saturday to face UAB.
