Megan Rapinoe has been kneeling during the national anthem for more than a month as a way to draw attention to racial oppression and police brutality in the United States.. She's done it while playing for the Seattle Reign and while playing for the United States as a way to draw attention to racial oppression in the country. She has been open about her motives and goals, stating that she hopes to be an ally to the African-American community.

On Thursday, Rapinoe went more in depth on her decision and action, explaining her reasoning in an article on the Players Tribune.

Rapinoe first kneeled during the anthem prior to a September 4 match while playing for the Seattle Reign. She said that she had been inspired by Colin Kaepernick's decision to protest and wanted to show her support for him and the cause he was trying to bring attention to.

Rapinoe. continued to take a knee during the anthem while playing for her club and when she was on the U.S. team to play Thailand on September 15, she chose to take a knee again. Some people commented that protesting during the national anthem while representing the country was hypocritical, but Rapinoe said that doing so was even more important while playing for the national team.
