Flames-Canadiens Preview

The Calgary Flames are having trouble shutting down opponents during their winless start. A matchup with the banged-up Montreal Canadiens could help them post their first victory of the season.

Calgary looks to remain undefeated in regulation in six straight meetings with Montreal when it continues a three-game road trip Thursday night.

The Flames opened 2011-12 with a 5-3 home loss to Pittsburgh on Saturday before falling 5-2 in St. Louis on Monday. Nine of the 10 goals they've allowed have come in the second and third periods.

"It's disappointing, but I think more than just a win, we need to find our game and to get our compete level up," right wing Jarome Iginla said after Monday's loss. "... Tonight, we got outcompeted and outworked. So it's more than just the 0-2. We just need to find our game."

Left wing Curtis Glencross, who set career highs with 24 goals and 43 points last season, has scored to get Calgary on the board first in each of its first two games.

"I don't know if you could put your finger on it but I think our first periods, we've had some solid play," right wing David Moss told the Flames' official website.

"In the second, for whatever reason, we have a letdown. I think maybe it just comes down to losing our focus a little bit and when things start to get away from you, the whole group starts to slip. That's something we can't afford to have happen."

Goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff, second in the NHL with 71 starts last season, played the opener before giving way to Henrik Karlsson on Monday.

"(Kiprusoff's) not going to play 75 games this year because that's what you guy's expect from him," said coach Brent Sutter, who held a closed-door meeting with the players after Monday's game. "He's not going to play that much this year and we want to get Karl going right off the bat here."

Kiprusoff is 7-3-0 with a 2.58 goals-against average versus Montreal, including 4-0-0 with a 2.03 GAA in his last five starts in the series. The Flames are 4-0-1 against the Canadiens during that stretch, outscoring them 19-10.

Montreal is coming off a high-scoring game, winning 5-1 at Winnipeg on Sunday after falling 2-0 in Toronto in its season opener last Thursday.

The Canadiens, though, will be without forward Michael Cammalleri and defenseman Jaroslav Spacek for the next few weeks.

Cammalleri is expected to miss 10-14 days because of a deep cut on his right leg, while Spacek will be out up to three weeks with an undisclosed upper-body injury.

Cammalleri, who scored the Canadiens' first goal of the season Sunday, escaped more serious injury as no muscle or tendon was cut when he appeared to make contact with teammate Yannick Weber's skate.

"I was scared at the time. I'm not a doctor, but I just know that I looked down and I could see the cut was deep and the blood was coming out fast," he told the Canadiens' official website.

"I wasn't panicking, but I had no idea what had been cut, if it was an artery or anything - I just figured I should get some attention for it as quickly as possible."

Montreal will be playing its first game of the season at the Bell Centre after finishing with 24 home wins - fourth-most in the Eastern Conference - in 2010-11.

The Canadiens have won five of six at home against the Flames.
