Costas rips Mets for being too happy
Those poor Mets. They can’t win for losing. Or lose for winning. Something like that.
They pull a big ninth-inning comeback for a win on Father’s Day, but then they get ripped by NBC’s Bob Costas for celebrating too much.
Costas’ recap of the game during an update as part of the network’s U.S. Open coverage contained this description: “The Mets with four in the bottom of the ninth to win it 4-3, and a team 14 games under .500 celebrates as if it just won the seventh game of the World Series. Another indication of the ongoing decline of western civilization.”
Yes, the Mets reacted. Starting pitcher Jeremy Hefner:
Hey Mr. Costas.. We will enjoy our wins!— Jeremy Hefner (@jeremy_hefner53) June 17, 2013
Strength coach Jim Malone:
And public relations man Jay Horwitz:
Mets held team meeting in Atlanta tonight. Vowed no more on field celebrations after wins. Players will now yell quietly in lockers.— Jay Horwitz (@Jay_HorwitzPR) June 17, 2013
To be fair — which really isn’t all that much fun — Horwitz later did tweet that Costas apologized: “Bob Costas called. Meant no harm. Said he would volunteer to throw pie for next walk-off win. Case closed.”
