Early epitaphs for 9 MLB teams that have no shot at the postseason Chris Bahr @ChrisBahr_FOX Mar 17, 2017 at 7:45a ET We’ve learned that we never should say never when it comes to Major League Baseball (see: Cubs’ 2016 World Series comeback; Red Sox’s 2004 ALCS comeback). But in this case, we like our chances. We've penned the early epitaphs (literally) for the teams that won’t be joining the playoff party this season. If we’re wrong, we’ll gladly eat crow (but not literally). The non-contending nine: USA TODAY Sports Kim Klement San Diego Padres “Finishing in last place again, the Padres quickly departed – for they got no production from any pitchers who started.” USA TODAY Sports Jake Roth Cincinnati Reds “Contending with those arms? They’d have had a better chance winning the lotto. Rebuilding just isn’t fair to poor Joey Votto.” USA TODAY Sports David Kohl Minnesota Twins “A run at fourth place in the AL Central was as far as they’d go. But the future remains bright with Buxton, Kepler, Polanco, Rosario and Sano.” USA TODAY Sports Kim Klement Oakland A's “The lineup and bullpen were much better than we thought, but that rotation was unproven, and it all went for naught.” USA TODAY Sports Jennifer Buchanan Milwaukee Brewers “When the hitting couldn’t mask the pitching any longer, the fans all looked smarter – for asking ‘why did they decide to get rid of Chris Carter?’ ” USA TODAY Sports Allan Henry Tampa Bay Rays “When they hit the ball, it sure was a sight to see. But they couldn’t overcome all the Ks and that low O-B-P.” USA TODAY Sports Kim Klement Chicago White Sox “After Sale, Eaton and Lawrie, the sell-off was over, some felt. But Quintana, Frazier and Robertson eventually were dealt.” USA TODAY Sports David Banks Arizona Diamondbacks “A fresh start and Torey Lovullo erased the nightmare of a season ago. But, alas, the schedule included only 19 games against San Diego.” USA TODAY Sports Matt Kartozian Philadelphia Phillies “After some veteran additions weren’t as productive as believed, they actually got leapfrogged by the surprising Braves and Big Sexy.” USA TODAY Sports Kim Klement Next Gallery 31 Every MLB team's most important player in 2017 Start Gallery » FOX Fantasy Baseball Join or Create a Free League Play Now!
