Garcia (shoulder) will join Triple-A Charlotte on Friday to begin a rehab assignment, Dan Hayes of CSNChicago.com reports.
Initially expected to miss the rest of the season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn labrum and an avulsion fracture in his left shoulder back in mid-April, Garcia has been cleared to return to active competition and will serve as the designated hitter for Charlotte on Friday. He will slowly work his way back into the outfield, making a mid-August return to the big club a likely best-case scenario, but the 23-year-old should take on at least a semi-regular role in right field immediately upon activation. In 72 games between Detroit and Chicago last season, Garcia hit .283/.309/.422 with seven homers and 31 RBI.
