David Cutcliffe, the mentor to both Mannings as well as several other QBs who have gone on to play in the NFL, and his staff at Duke made quite a recruiting pull out of Southern California, beating both USC and UCLA for four-star quarterback Jack Sears.

Sears is a product of the same program that produced former Utah QB Travis Wilson and USC’s Sam Darnold. The 6-foot-3, 202-pounder from San Clemente, California, is a pocket passer but displayed impressive athleticism at offseason combines this spring where he vertical jumped 36 inches and ran a sub-4.7 40 reportedly. Sears actually played WR as a sophomore when Darnold was the QB and impressed many recruiters with his intelligence as well as athleticism.

He took an official visit to Duke in March and had been personally recruited hard by Blue Devils WR Jeff Faris, who developed a good relationship with Sears and the rest of the Duke staff. The young QB actually took a second visit to Duke in June.

In addition to Peyton and Eli Manning, Cutcliffe has also developed Heath Shuler, Tee Martin, Thad Lewis and Sean Renfree on their paths to the NFL.
