Brazil's women's team hires Emily Lima as its first female coach

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Brazil's women's national team has its first female coach.

The Brazilian soccer confederation on Tuesday named former player Emily Lima to replace Oswaldo Alvarez (Vadão). Lima will debut on Dec. 7 in a tournament in the Amazon city of Manaus when Brazil faces Costa Rica. Brazil will also play Russia and Italy. As a coach, Lima took her Brazil women's club Sao Jose to a runner-up finish last month in the Brazilian Cup.

Alvarez led Brazil to a gold medal at the 2015 Pan Am Games, but failed to get a medal at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics. Brazil lost to Sweden on penalties in the semifinals. Brazil was the runner-up in the 2007 women's World Cup, and has been led for a decade by five-time player of the year Marta Vieira.
