Throwing it back to 1960: The biggest 'Big One' ever
"The Big One" is always a concern at Daytona International Speedway, which over the years has seen some spectacular multi-car crashes.
Friday night at the 2.5-mile superspeedway, Christopher Bell climbed out of his truck after a violent series of flips and rolls in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race. After a brief check up at a local hospital Bell was cleared to head home.
Last year, in the July NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race, Austin Dillon went up in the air and into the catch fence at the end of the race. He, too, walked away from his harrowing crash.
In Sunday's Daytona 500 (FOX, noon ET) fans will be on the edge of their seats for all 500 miles and you can bet drivers will have white knuckles the entire race, worried that a small mistake could trigger a 10- or 20-car crash.
But the biggest Big One in Daytona history happened way back in 1960 during a NASCAR Modified race, the precursor to the XFINITY Series today. In that race, 68 cars entered and 37 of them crashed in Turn 4 during the opening lap.
