StaTuesday: Packers' Jones and other rare 1 carry, 1 touchdown games

Aaron Jones certainly made the most of his playing time in Green Bay's win over Tampa Bay on Sunday.

The Packers running back was in on just two offensive snaps -- getting one carry, which he scored from 20 yards out in overtime to give Green Bay the victory.



It was the first time that a Packers player scored on his only carry of the game since … ok, well, in under a month. Jamaal Williams, who has taken over the starting backfield role from Jones, did the same against Detroit on Nov. 6, albeit his was just from 1-yard out and came in a loss.

Despite Williams' recent similar occurrence, scoring on the only carry of a game is quite rare in Packers annals. Jones' singular rush for a TD was the 36th time it has happened for Green Bay since 1950 and he was just the 25th player to accomplish the, uh, feat.

Most of the previous one carry for a TD players were quarterbacks (13 times by seven different QBs), with a few wide receivers thrown in as well a couple of tight ends and even one defensive player (B.J. Raji). There were also a few fullbacks (hello, John Kuhn). Williams, though, is just one of five "true" running backs (Fred Cone was a fullback in 1956, when fullbacks ran a little more often) who has the 1 carry-1 TD resume.

Williams' 20-yard run is tied for the fifth-longest of such games in Packers history, and the longest by a running back (four of the other five not surprisingly were done by wide receivers).

However, Williams is in a class of his own among the 1 carry-1 TD group -- he's not only the only player to do it in overtime, but also he's the only to have a game-winning score.

William Henderson came close to doing it twice. In his 1999 one-carry, one-TD game he scored with four minutes to play, giving Green Bay a 31-27 lead over Carolina, but Panthers quarterback Steve Beuerlein ran it in from one-yard out as time expired to win the game. In 2002, Henderson's 1-yard touchdown with 1:10 remaining put Green Bay on top of Atlanta 34-31. However, Jay Feely hit a 52-yard field goal with 5 seconds left to send the game into OT, where Packers kicker Ryan Longwell won it with a 34-yard field goal.

This is perhaps not an honor Jones would like to own -- we're sure he'd like to have more than one carry a game -- but we also know that Lambeau Leap had to feel good.
