Rose: A-Rod needs to be told how good he is on 'daily basis'

The always-animated Pete Rose did not disappoint in an interview that aired on "Late Night with Seth Meyers" Monday.

Meyers broached a number of subjects with the Reds great, including Rose's day managing an Independent League team, who he sees as the best baseball player of all time and his thoughts on the state of the game today.

On embattled New York Yankee Alex Rodriguez, Rose takes a firm stance.

"He's one of those guys you've gotta pat on the butt," Rose told Meyers. "A-Rod — you need to tell him how good he is on a daily basis."

A-Rod doesn't have a lot of confidence "for a guy who makes $30 million a year," according to Rose, who noted how the suspended slugger would send him texts when he was struggling.

Never short on humor, Rose joked about his past troubles.

"There was a time in my life they would've played 'Jailhouse Rock,'" he said, discussing walk-up songs.

Rose brushed off the question of the possibility of his reinstatement to the game: "I'm the one that screwed up. I'm the one in the position I'm in because of what I did. So I can't worry about (Commissioner) Bud Selig doing this or Bud Selig doing that."

And when it comes to one of the Reds' NL Central rivals, the Chicago Cubs, there's no love lost.

"You know what God told the Cubs?" Rose asked Meyers, who couldn't have expected such a question presented in his direction. "Don't do a damn thing 'til I get back."

Rose is currently trying to gain support for SportsBeep, a fantasy sports app he says is "totally, totally legal."
