Padres acquire RHP Miguel Diaz

NATIONAL HARBOR, MD – The San Diego Padres today announced they acquired right-handed pitcher Justin Haley from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations. The Padres also announced they have acquired right-handed pitcher Miguel Diaz from the Minnesota Twins in exchange for Haley and a player to be named later or cash considerations. Executive Vice President/General Manager A.J. Preller made the announcement.

Diaz, 22, was selected by the Minnesota Twins first overall in the Major League phase of the Rule 5 Draft earlier today from the Milwaukee Brewers. He went 1-8 with a 3.71 ERA (39 ER, 94.2 IP) and 91 strikeouts against 29 walks in 26 games, 15 starts, for Single-A Wisconsin in 2016. Over parts of five minor league seasons (2012-15) in the Milwaukee Brewers organization, the Dominican Republic native has gone 8-18 with a 3.51 ERA (92 ER, 236.0 IP) and 222 strikeouts against 90 walks in 72 games, 35 starts. The right-hander was originally signed by the Brewers on December 1, 2011 to a minor league contract.
