Marlins righty Henderson Alvarez makes NL All-Star team for first time

Miami Marlins right-hander Henderson Alvarez was named a National League All-Star for the first time on Saturday.

Alvarez will replace Washington Nationals righty Jordan Zimmermann, who exited his Friday start with a biceps cramp.

The 24-year-old is 6-4 with a 2.63 ERA (sixth best in the NL) in 19 starts. Until his rough outing Friday against the New York Mets when he allowed a season-high six runs in just five innings, the Marlins had won 10 starts of his in a row, a franchise record. His ERA rose from 2.27 to 2.63.

Alvarez has recorded consecutive scoreless innings stretches of 26 and 19 1/3 this season. He leads the majors with three complete game shutouts.

For the first time since 2010 two Marlins will represent the organization at the Midsummer Classic. That year, shortstop Hanley Ramirez and righty Josh Johnson earned the honor.  Alvarez joins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton, who made the team as a reserve and is set to participate in the Home Run Derby.

This year's All-Star Game will be televised on FOX at 8 p.m. Tuesday from Target Field, home of the Minnesota Twins.
