Manny Fernandez to be inducted into 2014 Dolphins Honor Roll
Legendary defensive tackle Manny Fernandez will be inducted into the 2014 Dolphins Honor Roll, the team announced on Wednesday.
Fernandez becomes the 27th player in team history to receive the honor after a vote by the Honor Roll Committee.
Joining the team as an undrafted free agent in 1968, Fernandez would go on to play his entire nine-year career with the Dolphins in an illustrious career spanning 103 games and 93 starts.
In addition to being an integral member of the 1972 Perfect Season team, he recorded 17 tackles in a dominant performance during Super Bowl VII and notched 28 total tackles and three sacks in his three career Super Bowl appearances. His 35 career sacks is the second-highest total by any defensive tackle in the franchise's history.
"Manny Fernandez was the first of several elite defensive tackles who played for the Miami Dolphins," Miami Dolphins Senior Vice President of Special Projects & Alumni Relations Nat Moore said. "Fernandez was an expert at controlling the line of scrimmage on defense and freeing up the linebackers to run and make tackles. We're elated to celebrate his accomplishments by welcoming him to the prestigious Honor Roll."
Among his many career honors, he was selected to the Dolphins Silver Anniversary team in 1990 that celebrated the franchise's 25 years in the NFL. He was also voted to the Dolphins All-Time team in 2007 and inducted into the Dolphins Walk of Fame on Dec. 26, 2012.
He will be officially inducted during halftime of the Dolphins-Minnesota Vikings game at Sun Life Stadium on Dec. 21.
