Forte, Pineiro lead Portland St. past NAU
PORTLAND, Ore. -- Cameron Forte had 20 points, 15 boards and 10 assists, Isaiah Pineiro had a career-high 31 points and 12 rebounds and Portland State beat Northern Arizona 89-81 Thursday night.
Forte's triple-double was the first in Portland State (11-17, 7-10 Big Sky Conference) history. Pineiro shot 12 for 19 from the field and 6 for 9 from the free-throw line.
Kris Yanku led Northern Arizona (5-23, 3-14) with a career-high 32 points on 13-for-19 shooting from the field. Ako Kaluna added 18 boards and 17 points for NAU.
"I thought we competed well in the first half, despite the scoring drought that we had in the middle," NAU coach Jack Murphy said. "Portland State opened the game up in the second half and I was not happy about that. I made some changes to the lineup and that's what we needed at that moment. Late in the game we started playing hard and managed to cut their lead down."
The Lumberjacks went on a late 21-9 run to close to the gap but ran out of time.
Mike Green's 3 gave the Lumberjacks their last lead of the game at 17-15 with 12:05 remaining before halftime. Calaen Robinson's layup a little more than five minutes later capped a 10-0 Vikings run and they never looked back.
A 39-29 halftime lead swelled to 70-43 when Pineiro made 1 of 2 free throws with 9:48 left.
