DraftKings Early MLB Picks For September 17
There are five afternoon games today. We have four pitchers that are priced at aces, and one more than is in the middle tier. That leaves half the pool as cheap options on DraftKings. Are any of them worth using, or should we pay for two high priced pitchers? Let’s check out the past stats for some help in our decision.
NOTE: these picks are based solely on statistics. Some players have never faced their opponents, or have very little experience against them. I am not saying that none of those are good picks. The highest scorer of the day could be someone with no experience against his opponent. This is based on statistical analysis only. If you have a gut feeling, then by all means, follow that. This is not an exact science. The best lineups usually have a mix of proven stats and hot players. Check out this post from Matt McGarvey for great tips about whether to use a hot player in DFS or not.
Bryan Mitchell was good against Toronto in his first start, then got blasted by the Dodgers in his second. I wouldn’t use him against Boston.
Trevor Williams gave up three runs in just one inning of relief against the Reds on Saturday. Do you really think him starting the game is going to make enough of a difference?

Best Bet:
Carlos Carrasco ($9,900): The Tigers are hitting .236 against Carrasco in 191 at bats, but they have only scored 16 runs, and have struck out 45 times. On a day without a true great option going, Carrasco is looking pretty good for your lineups. Especially if you plan on fading Verlander or Arrieta.
Honorable Mention:
Brandon Finnegan ($6,700): The Pirates have managed a .273 average in 33 at bats, but they have scored just one run and struck out nine times. On a short slate, that could translate to elite possibilities. On top of that, Finnegan shut out the Pirates over five innings on Sunday while striking out seven. If he could limit the walks, he will have a great day!
Zach Davies ($6,500): The Cubs are hitting a decent .259 off of Davies in 81 at bats with nine runs scored and only 12 strikeouts. That said, this is a small slate, and it also happens to be a slate when a lot of the top options have been knocked around by their opponents. You can do worse than Davies.

There is a stack to be had against David Price. The Yankees are one of those teams that have hit him well in his career. Jacoby Ellsbury ($3,100) is 25-70(.357) with three walks, six doubles, two triples, a homer, and six RBI against Price. Starlin Castro ($3,400) already has four hits in eight at bats against Price with a walk, a double, and a RBI. Didi Gregorius ($2,900) has six hits in 15 at bats with a walk, two doubles, and four RBI. Chase Headley ($2,600) is 10-27(.370) with a walk, two doubles, a triple, and three RBI. Brian McCann ($3,000) could be worth using if he starts. McCann is 10-29(.345) against Price with a walk, three homers, and seven RBI. Mark Teixeira ($2,800) is only 15-70(.214), but he has six walks, three doubles, three homers, and nine RBI against Price.
The Braves have actually hit Gio Gonzalez well. Freddie Freeman ($4,500) is 10-33(.303) with two walks, four doubles, two homers, and an impressive 11 RBI against Gio. Adonis Garcia ($3,100) already has four hits in eight at bats with a double and a RBI. Matt Kemp ($4,600) is 4-15(.267) with two walks a double, a homer, and five RBI. Nick Markakis ($3,700) only has seven hits in 32 at bats(.219) against Gio Gonzalez, but he has three walks, two doubles, and five RBI. Dansby Swanson ($2,600) has a walk and a solo homer in three at bats.
You should fade Justin Verlander, by the way. Cleveland has 52 runs scored in only 387 at bats against him. Lonnie Chisenhall ($3,300) is 11-37(.297) with two walks, three doubles, a homer, and five RBI against Verlander. Coco Crisp ($3,400) is 10-29(.345) with two walks, two doubles, a homer, and four RBI. Tyler Naquin ($3,300) has two hits in seven at bats. One of them is a solo homer. Carlos Santana ($4,400) is just 13-61(.213) against Verlander, but he has seven walks, two doubles, seven homers, and 11 RBI against him.

Miguel Cabrera ($4,900) is 10-31(.323) with three walks, a double, a homer, and three RBI against Carlos Carrasco. J.D. Martinez ($3,600) is 7-19(.368) with a walk, two doubles, two homers, and seven RBI against Carrasco. Justin Upton ($3,600) only has two hits in nine at bats, but one is a solo homer.
Ryan Zimmerman ($3,000) is 2-5 with a double, a homer, and three RBI against Josh Collmenter. Daniel Murphy ($5,400) is 5-12 with a pair of doubles, but he has no counting stats.
Ryan Braun ($4,000) is 4-15 with three walks, a homer, and four RBI against Jake Arrieta. Hernan Perez ($3,900) has three hits in eight at bats with two walks and a solo homer. Kirk Nieuwenhuis ($2,800) is only 2-11, but he has a homer and three RBI against Arrieta.
Kris Bryant ($4,600) is 4-12 with a double, a homer, and three RBI against Kyle Davies. Anthony Rizzo ($5,200) has three hits in ten at bats. All of the hits are doubles, but he has only one RBI.
